Charter & Governance

ALBA is a public charter school, which is different from a traditional public school.

Charter Schools

A significant difference is that charter schools are exempt from following most rules in Wisconsin Statutes, Chapters 115–121. This means they gain more freedom, but they must still adhere to any laws or agreements outlined in their charter. They must also meet higher standards of accountability.

MPS has two types of charter schools:

  • ALBA is an instrumentality charter school, which means we are staffed by MPS employees in a building that is owned or leased by MPS.
  • Non-instrumentality charter schools are staffed by non-MPS employees in buildings that are owned or leased by the school.

Governance

School Governance Board (SGB)

ALBA’s School Governance Board meets at least six times a year and includes both parents and community members. They work together to make sure ALBA provides a nurturing and high-quality learning environment for all students. The Board works on school finances, policy, and strategy. This helps improve ALBA students’ educational outcomes.
