Three of ALBA’s founding teachers—Brenda Martinez, Radames Galarza, and Elissa Guarnero—were among People Magazine’s 2013 Teachers of the Year.
As they explained, “We found ourselves teaching at schools where bilingual students were treated as though their culture and language was a liability rather than an asset.” Thus began the idea for ALBA—where all three still teach today.
ALBA’s founding group of parents and teachers began with one common goal: to create a bilingual learning environment where families could become truly active in their children’s education. More than twenty years later, we continue to embrace both language and cultural diversity to build on the ethnic background and knowledge of our community. ALBA was designed to allow children to develop solid language skills, appreciation of cultural roots, love for the arts, and confidence to do well in school.
ALBA started with just 10 staff members and 125 eager students. We have since expanded to serve more than 600 students. Our environment remains close-knit, with all teachers working as a team to see that each individual student succeeds.
