Community Service

High school students at Audubon Technology and Communication Center who complete 100 service hours secure a spot in our graduation ceremony and also surpass the Milwaukee Public Schools’ community service/service-learning graduation requirement by 75 hours.

Service Expectations and Communications

Students may use their community service hours to contribute to the Audubon community, learn more about a cause or content area that interests them, or support the work of a local nonprofit. Community service takes many forms:

  • Direct Service – Verified actions that benefit our community or environment. Seniors can intern with a cooperating Audubon High School staff member for a total of 50 hours/semester.
  • Representation – Active involvement in school-sponsored extracurricular activities or athletics. Students must end the semester or season with 85% attendance or better and in “good standing.” Students can earn a total of 10 hours per season.
  • Advocacy – Speaking or demonstrating on behalf of a cause to prompt action on an issue or social concern.
  • Research – Analyze and report on data from varied sources to influence policies or practices.

Students follow community service best practices such as:

  • Service hours must take place outside of class time.
  • Service must be completed through a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or local government agency. Examples include a school, school district, library, or police department.
  • Service must be completed under the supervision of an adult at the organization.
  • Service may not be part of a criminal justice sanction.
  • Students cannot be paid for their service.

Students track service hours on Audubon’s community service verification form. Community partners review and approve student service hours on Audubon’s verification form. Students should communicate with partners to confirm their hours are tracked accurately and consistently.
