Families

Family is our greatest resource at Auer Avenue School. Students perform better and enjoy school more when family members and caretakers are involved.

When caretakers are partners in their child’s learning journey and contribute to Auer Avenue School as committee members, volunteers, and advocates, our entire school is more successful.

Family Engagement and Events

Auer Avenue School has a dedicated family coordinator on staff to answer questions about family engagement, family events, and school and community resources.

Wanita Johnson is our family coordinator. She runs our Family Resource Center, open during school hours. Please stop in the main office to sign in and ask for directions.

Visit the Family Resource Center to complete a volunteer application, request translation or interpretation support, look through our family resource binder, and learn about upcoming events at Auer Avenue School.

Meet our teachers and staff and connect with other Auer Avenue families during school events and activities. Many members of our school community turn out to support students and share the Auer Avenue Bears pride.

Community School Leadership Team (CSLT)

As a Community School, we work with staff, students, families, community partners and neighbors to identify needs and determine strategies to best ensure student and school success. Family members and community partners are invited to monthly CSLT meetings.

Family Council

As a Community School, Auer Avenue School families have a voice in discussions and decision making to support our students. Family members of all ages are invited to monthly Family Council meetings.

Athletics

Our athletics program brings families together to cheer on Auer Avenue School’s basketball and cheerleading teams in grades one through five. Family members are our biggest cheerleaders and also our volunteer coaches.

Reading Diner

This monthly event brings teachers, caretakers, and students together to develop literacy skills, and enjoy a family meal. A community atmosphere and delicious meal makes homework fun and supports healthy eating and reading habits.

Helping with Homework

At home, be sure to provide a quiet time and place for your student to do homework. At home, students have access to the same online programs they use in class. Have your student log in through Clever to find learning programs like Smarty Ants, Discovery Education, Flocabulary, and others.

Communicating with Your Child’s Teacher

Stay in touch with your student’s teacher and stay up to date on their academic goals and accomplishments. Students feel extra motivated when they see teachers and caretakers working as a team to reinforce high expectations and positive learning strategies.

Teachers send progress reports to caretakers and hold conferences, and teachers and staff are ready to help Auer Avenue School families with extra meetings or reports. Here are some tips for building a strong caretaker-teacher relationship to support your student.

  • Collect current school and teacher contact information at the beginning of each school year. You can gather this information from teacher handouts, during open-house events, or visit our staff directory.
  • Join Class Dojo, a digital communication app that Auer Avenue School teachers and coaches use to easily, quickly communicate with families. Teachers provide login information at the beginning of the school year or sports season.
  • Attend caretaker-teacher conferences. Students are proud to “show off” their school and feel supported when teachers and caretakers make time to meet at a conference or school event.
  • If a scheduled conference time does not work for you, contact the teacher to choose a different time. Or schedule a virtual appointment or phone call with the teacher. Ask if your student should attend.
  • Send your student to school with a bookbag every day and check the bookbag when they come home at night. Lots of important paperwork travels from school to your home and back in bookbags: assignments, permission slips, classroom updates, and school calendars.

Supporting Your Student’s Education

Family involvement leads to better grades, better attendance, improved test scores, higher self-esteem, and better behavior for children. Supporting your student’s success at Auer Avenue School includes practices and priorities like:

  • Make sure your student arrives at school on time every day (7:25 a.m.).
  • Call the attendance line when your student will be absent, at (414) 875-4500. We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with any who are absent. We must also record absences correctly.
  • Ensure that your student gets at least nine hours of sleep every night.
  • Dress your student appropriately for the weather. Please tell us if your student needs a coat or other outerwear.
  • Check your student’s bookbag every day for homework or important messages.
  • Help your student with homework. At home, have a quiet time and place for homework.
  • Read with your student every day.
  • Volunteer at school. Learn more about volunteering with MPS.
  • Ask how you can join our field trips.
