Common Core State Standards<\/h2>\n
The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards<\/a>. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.<\/p>\n Specialist teachers lead weekly art, music, and physical education classes so students can explore mind-body wellness, find their creative voice and vision\u2014strengthening math and literacy skills\u2014and perform at school events and community concerts.<\/p>\n Teachers follow best practices, academic standards, and bring new teaching-and-learning technology and strategies into the classroom so students learn, practice, and apply critical math skills.<\/p>\n Literacy is a priority at Auer Avenue School. Students from K4 through fifth grade are taught reading, writing, and oral language for 90 minutes a day.<\/p>\n Educating the whole child means providing equal opportunities for every student in our building to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Teachers develop classroom routines, and model healthy communication and calming skills to help students feel secure in school, manage big emotions that are part of childhood, and refocus on lessons when needed.<\/p>\n Schools district-wide and nationwide, including Auer Avenue, use evidence-based programs like Second Step and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.<\/p>\n MPS serves all children with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, hearing, learning, physical, speech, and vision disabilities. Consistent standards will provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live.\n\nThese standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs.
