Partnerships

Partnership is powerful at Browning School.

Families, nonprofit partners, and neighbors uplift our scholars as they grow into leaders of the future through today’s learning experiences. We are grateful for the educational opportunities, unique perspectives, and new experiences made possible by our generous community partners.

Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin

Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin advocates for families and actively works to create programs to build healthier communities. Their work is guided by national and statewide priorities defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Their work is carried out in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Alliance Advisory Board. Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin administers the Love My Air Wisconsin environmental health program. Browning School is honored to participate in this pilot program.

City Year Milwaukee

Members of the nonprofit’s AmeriCorps team work with our teachers during the school day, helping provide students with individualized attention. Serving as tutors, mentors, and role models, the AmeriCorps team at Browning School helps students develop social, emotional, and academic skills needed for success in school and in life.

Direct Supply

The Milwaukee-based healthcare company supports community partners who are doing impactful work by serving seniors, advancing racial and social justice, and supporting health and education. Their investment in youth and STEM-focused education includes scholarship programs, internship pipelines, and health education for local underrepresented youth and community members. Direct Supply Community Involvement supports Browning’s STEM programming and student achievement.

First Stage

First Stage touches hearts, engages minds, and transforms lives by creating extraordinary theater experiences for young people and families. Scholars attend First Stage Milwaukee performances and First Stage educators bring theater-skills and arts-integrated workshops to Browning School.

Foster Grandparent Program

A trio of neighborhood elders serve as our school’s “official grandparents,” providing emotional support, homework help, and general grandparent wisdom to students, staff, and families.

Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM)

Chartered by the State of Wisconsin in 1944, HACM provides high-quality, affordable housing options to more than 10,000 Milwaukee families, seniors, and disabled adults. Through a wide range of economic, health, and social services, HACM assists residents in achieving self-sufficiency. HACM supports Browning School’s partnership with Silver Spring Neighborhood Center. Many residents of the authority’s Westlawn Gardens housing community send their children to our school and also participate in neighborhood center programs.

Johnson Controls

Helping customers achieve their sustainability goals motivates Johnson Controls, a building technology, services, and software company with 100,000 employees in 150 countries. Johnson Controls and the Milwaukee Bucks funded the multi-sports complex Browning School shares with Silver Spring Neighborhood Center (SSNC). As a partner in the Browning Greenhouse Revitalization Project, Johnson Controls joined SSNC, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and SHARP Literacy to renovate and revive our greenhouse in 2018. Today their employees volunteer in the Johnson Controls Community Garden and Greenhouse. Johnson Controls also sponsors theatrical performances and theater-skills workshops for our students and brings Mary Lou’s Closet to our school.

Junior Achievement USA

Junior Achievement USA is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. Junior Achievement’s programs in work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy ignite the spark in young people to experience and realize the opportunities and realities of work and life in the 21st century. Browning School students participate in Junior Achievement programming through Junior Achievement of Wisconsin.

Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful (KGMB)

KGMB promotes sustainability by initiating, collaborating, and promoting education and beautification programs in partnership with its communities. KGMB staff teach youth to reduce, reuse, and recycle through hands-on tours, field research, and outreach opportunities. Browning School students learn sustainability skills and explore environmental justice in KGMB programs.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks are a professional basketball team in the Eastern Conference Central Division of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was founded in 1968 as an expansion team and won the NBA World Championship in 1971 and 2021. The Milwaukee Bucks and Johnson Controls funded the multi-sports complex and green infrastructure Browning School shares with Silver Spring Neighborhood Center.

Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership

Browning School is proud to be a member of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership (MCSP). Through MCSP, our students, families, teachers, staff, neighbors, and partners come together to form a strategy that best meets the needs of our students.

The MCSP is made up of three key partners with the core values of shared leadership, equity, and cultural relevance:

  • Milwaukee Public Schools
  • Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association
  • United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE)

MSOE is a private, non-profit university committed to fostering a higher standard of academic programming and research, and personalized service, instruction, and guidance. MSOE faculty and students contributed mechanical and electrical engineering and project management expertise — like construction of a large solar dehydrator — to our school’s greenhouse renovation and aquaponic installation projects.

Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA)

Members of the MTEA are the educators who work directly with the students who attend Milwaukee’s public schools. Collectively they advocate for quality public education in Milwaukee. As advocates for educators, they are advocates for all children. They are here to lead the dialogue, to challenge, to support and work for change — ensuring a better future for members and the students and families they serve. The MTEA is a lead partner of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership.

Playworks Wisconsin

Playworks Wisconsin gives kids foundational skills for success on the playground, in the classroom, and in the community. Playworks Wisconsin is the leading organization that leverages play to promote healthy behaviors and increase social and emotional learning, at recess and throughout the school day.

PortFish, Ltd.

With a vision to address and raise awareness of issues and concerns related to current and future food supplies, PortFish is a nonprofit focused on food production strategies that are sustainable, local, and year-round. Browning School and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center consult with PortFish on continued maintenance and care of the aquaponics system that is part of our Johnson Controls Community Garden and Greenhouse.

SHARP Literacy

SHARP Literacy brings visual arts experiences with professional artists and authors into the classroom. The SHARP Literacy approach sparks curiosity and a love of learning. Students develop a deeper understanding of complex vocabulary and build the background knowledge that is so important for reading comprehension. SHARP Literacy educators bring STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) programming to Browning School. They also helped lead our greenhouse renovation project in 2018, a partnership that also included Johnson Controls, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center. SHARP Literacy staff now contribute to the Johnson Controls Community Garden and Greenhouse as volunteers and educators.

Silver Spring Neighborhood Center (SSNC)

SSNC has been helping families and individuals of Northwest Milwaukee obtain self-sufficiency since 1958. SSNC is our partner organization through the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership and provides after-school programming at Browning School. We share a building, multi-sports complex, and the Johnson Controls Community Garden and Greenhouse with the center.

United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County

An independently-governed 501(c)3 nonprofit organization connected to a network of more than 1,400 local United Ways through United Way Worldwide, the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County focuses on local solutions for local problems. The United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County is a lead partner of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership.

Wisconsin Air National Guard

The Wisconsin Air National Guard is the aerial militia of Wisconsin. It is, along with the Wisconsin Army National Guard, an element of the Wisconsin National Guard. The Wisconsin Air National Guard sponsors STARBASE Wisconsin, an interactive academic program that helps youth from Browning and other schools increase their STEM knowledge.

Wisconsin Bike Fed

The Wisconsin Bike Fed helps lead and coordinate Safe Routes to School efforts in direct partnership with the MPS Physical Education Department. Through the Bike Fed’s direct instruction, over 25,000 MPS scholars have participated in Walking Wisdom or Bicycle Driver’s Ed curricula since 2005. These curricula form the building blocks of other Bike Fed programs that aim to improve student mobility, such as Walk & Bike to School Day events, Walking Clubs, Bike Camps, and traffic calming efforts with the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works.

Zoological Society of Milwaukee

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee passionately works to conserve wildlife and the environment, educate our community through innovative programs, and support the Milwaukee County Zoo. As a nonprofit organization, the Society raises money for local, regional, and international conservation efforts and to help the Zoo remain a top cultural destination in Wisconsin and beyond. Scholars in grades two through four learn about the animal kingdom, our shared environment, and more through the Animal Ambassadors program at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
