We are a network of support to uplift families and grow students who will be the leaders of the future. Family engagement is one of our school’s top priorities, and parents and caregivers can contribute to Browning School as committee members, volunteers, and advocates.
Family and Community Resources
Parent Coordinator Latasha Holt runs the Browning School Parent Center and publishes our school newsletter. Our Parent Center is located in room 109, and is open during school hours. Parents and family members can connect with Latasha Holt at holtel@milwaukee.k12.wi.us or (414) 393-5241.
“There is always hot coffee and comfortable chairs in our Parent Center for you to relax in. We can chat about anything that’s on your mind. I am here to help you with any questions and I’ll work to find a solution using resources and our wonderful staff. I look forward to seeing you!” – Latasha Holt, Parent Coordinator
District Advisory Council (DAC)
Families can stay informed on and share ideas about the district’s Title I programs and priorities during monthly council meetings. Each school sends two delegates to meetings; alternates may attend as well.
Family Leadership Organization (FLO)
Monthly meetings promote family engagement. FLO meetings are an important way to get involved at Browning School, ensuring that parents and family members participate in discussion and decision-making that puts our students’ needs first.
Community School Leadership Team (CSLT)
Families join staff, students, community partners, and community members to identify needs and determine strategies to best ensure student and school success during monthly CSLT meetings. Our CSLT meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Stakeholders can attend either session. Community School Coordinator Gianna Holschbach runs our Community School Leadership Team and Community School Youth Council.
Communicating with Your Child’s Teacher
Stay in touch with your child’s teacher and stay up to date on their academic goals and accomplishments. Scholars feel extra motivated when they see teachers and parents working as a team to reinforce high expectations.
Teachers at Browning School send progress reports to parents and guardians and hold conferences — one each fall and spring. We are ready to help our families with extra meetings or reports. Here are some tips for building a strong parent-teacher relationship.
- Collect current school and teacher contact information at the beginning of every school year. You can gather this information from teacher handouts, during open-house events, or visit our staff directory.
- Join ClassDojo, a digital communication app that our staff use to communicate with families. Your scholar’s teacher will provide login information.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences. Scholars are proud to “show off” their school and feel supported when teachers and caregivers make time to meet at a conference. If a scheduled conference time does not work for you, contact the teacher to choose a different time. Or schedule a virtual appointment or phone call with the teacher. Ask if your child should attend.
- Sign up for the MPS Family Friday Newsletter.
Supporting Your Child During the School Day
Family involvement leads to better grades, better attendance, improved test scores, higher self-esteem, and better behavior for children. Supporting your child’s success at Browning School includes practices and priorities like:
- Make sure your child arrives at school on time every day (7:25 a.m.).
- Call the attendance line when your child will be absent, at (414) 393-5200. We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with any who are absent. We must also record absences correctly.
- Become a Browning School volunteer. Complete your Milwaukee Public Schools volunteer application today.
- We have fundraisers for family events, school-improvement projects, and our athletics program. Watch our school newsletter for information on fundraisers happening throughout the year.
Supporting Your Child’s Education at Home
Routine and structure at home can keep your child focused on learning and can be enriching for your entire family.
- Help your child with homework. At home, have a quiet time and place for homework.
- Explore learning programs and games with your child. Login through Clever to find programs like Smarty Ants, My Path, Discovery Education, and Flocabulary.
- Check your child’s bookbag every day for homework and messages.
- Read to your child every day.
- Ensure that your child gets at least nine hours of sleep every night.
- Dress your child appropriately for the weather. Please tell us if your child needs a coat or other outerwear.
