When scholars complete the fifth grade, they leave Browning School prepared for middle school coursework and ready to contribute to their new school communities with confidence and care.<\/p>\n

Ambitious Instruction Plan<\/h2>\n

The Milwaukee Public Schools Ambitious Instruction Plan<\/a> recognizes and celebrates that our students come from many cultures and backgrounds. This plan focuses on high-quality, culturally appropriate teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that every student develops reading, writing, and math skills in ways that are meaningful to their individual lives and experiences. Our staff works together to understand each learner and find appropriate ways to assess and improve their progress. We then make sure that students can apply what they have learned in productive ways in school and in their community.<\/p>\n

Common Core State Standards<\/h2>\n

The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards<\/a>. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.<\/p>\n

Curriculum<\/h2>\n

Art, Library, Music, and Physical Education<\/h3>\n

Specialist teachers lead art, music, and physical education classes. Scholars learn about mind-body wellness, grow as artists who beautify our campus with their creations, and study and perform the music of many cultures in weekly classes.<\/p>\n

Weekly visits to our Library Media Center give students access to a wealth of print and digital reading materials and learning tools and technologies.<\/p>\n

Math<\/h3>\n

Educators implement effective teaching practices so students learn, practice, and apply critical math skills in standards-based lessons. Coming in 2025, our STEAM Lab will be a destination for hands-on science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities that encourage scholars\u2019 creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking.<\/p>\n

Reading\/Language Arts<\/h3>\n

Students from K3 through fifth grade are taught reading, writing, and oral language for 90 minutes a day. Every classroom has its own library featuring multicultural histories and stories from Black Lives Matter and First Nations Studies to Hispanic heritage and cultures.<\/p>\n

Social and Emotional Learning<\/h2>\n

Educating the whole child means providing equal opportunities so all Browning School scholars can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Teachers develop classroom routines, and model healthy communication and calming skills to help students feel secure in school, manage the big emotions of childhood, and refocus on lessons when necessary.<\/p>\n

Special Education<\/h2>\n

MPS serves all children with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, hearing, learning, physical, speech, and vision disabilities. The school\u2019s special education teachers, regular education teachers, school social worker, school psychologist, and administration work together to meet students\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n
