New! Staff Spotlight
We’re excited to launch a new feature in our newsletter called Staff Spotlight! Each week, we’ll highlight one of our amazing teachers or staff members so you can get to know the incredible people who make our school a great place to learn and grow. From favorite hobbies to inspiring stories, we’ll give you a peek into the lives of the dedicated individuals who work hard to support our students every day.
This week’s spotlight is on Mrs. Nisleit, our school counselor. From working with students in small groups to planning one of Burdick’s most popular events “Unity Day”, she enriches our school community in so many ways. The Burdick community appreciates everything you do for our students and families Mrs. Nisleit! We asked Mrs. Nisleit some fun questions and here is how she answered them:
  1. As a kid I just loved school in general, and it’s not surprising that I work in a school for a career! My favorite subjects were art and gym class. I loved being creative and playing games.
  2. I love music and a theme song would be a fun way to start the day. I would choose “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons because it has a fun beat and great lyrics. I think everyone can relate to feeling down or sad but getting to the top or reaching our goals is the best feeling!
  3. I love the timing of this question because one of my favorite events at Burdick School is in just a couple of weeks. Burdick School will be celebrating Unity Day on Friday, October 4 at 1 pm to celebrate kindness and help stop bullying. I hope Burdick families can join us and try to wear orange for this wonderful event. Unity Day is special to me because I always believe that kindness can have a huge impact for both our school and community. I love watching older and younger students walk together and unite for this special tradition.
Picture Day
Picture day is on Friday, September 20. Order forms were sent home with your student. School pictures can also be ordered online via the School and Sports website found here:

Third Friday
We have had a lot of fun celebrating spirit week this week in anticipation of Third Friday! Tomorrow is a very important day for two reasons: The State of Wisconsin will count all students who are in school to determine the amount of funding provided to schools this year and It’s Picture Day! Help Burdick by making sure all students are in class on September 20!
Friday 9/20- Dress Your Best Day- It’s Picture Day! Dress to impress!
Spirit Wear
The Burdick Spirit Wear online store is now open through Friday, September 27th.  All orders will be ready to pick up at Burdick approximately 4-6 weeks after the online store closes on September 27th. High School Enrollment Meeting
7th and 8th grade families are invited and encouraged to attend Burdick’s High School Enrollment meeting on Tuesday, October 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. We will go over important information including the enrollment process and MPS high school admission criteria which focus on the 7th and 8th grade years. Families can contact Our school counselor, Ms. Nisleit at nisleirr@milwaukee.k12.wi.us

Unity Day
Please mark your calendars for our annual Unity Day celebration on Friday, October 4 at 12:45 pm! This day is about standing together against bullying and celebrating kindness. Students are encouraged to wear orange and create signs to promote kindness.
Hispanic Heritage Month
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities year-round, from September 15 to October 15 we give special recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States. This includes impactful advocacy, vibrant art, beloved foods, and so much more. It’s the perfect time to explore the rich history, colorful traditions, and remarkable achievements of people from countries like Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, and beyond. Let’s come together to embrace diversity and honor the cultures that make our world so unique!
Here are some great resources for families to explore together:
Burdick Visitor Policy
Milwaukee Public Schools is committed to keeping all students and staff safe during the school day. The district has procedures for visitors to schools and for students who need to be released early from school to attend appointments.
Visitor Policy
Every MPS school has procedures to make sure only persons with a valid purpose are entering buildings.
All visitors must:
  • Use the designated main entrance and clearly identify yourself.
  • Report to the main office
  • Show a form of identification.
  • Sign in on the MPS Visitor Record.
  • Wear/display the MPS Visitor Pass at all times while in the school.
  • Be escorted to the requested location.
  • Return the Visitor Pass to the office/security desk and sign out.
  • Visitors are limited to TWO per student for meetings, conferences, and classroom visits unless approved by the building administrator or designee.
If you would like to speak with a teacher, we ask that you schedule a meeting via email or phone call.
Early Release
Students are expected to be in school for the full day. When appointments must take place on a school day, the following procedures must be followed.
For Parents/Guardians of Students in Grades K–8
  1. Update your emergency contacts as needed to make sure anyone authorized to pick up your child is listed.
  2. On the day before or the morning of an appointment, call the school office. Please tell them what time you will pick up your child and the purpose of the absence.
  3. Enter the building to pick up your child.
  4. Have your ID with you.
  5. School staff will check your ID and have you sign out your child.
Please note that schools cannot release children without a parent/guardian or approved person present to pick them up. This is for the safety of students. We want to ensure that only authorized persons are picking up children from school.
School Community Partnership for Mental Health
Burdick is excited to welcome Ms. Pamela Schieffer from Mental Health America to our community! Ms. Schieffer will be working at Burdick in room 215 on Mondays and Wednesday providing services for SCPMH. Each month we will include a newsletter from Ms. Scheiffer that will focus on mental health, signs and symptoms of disorders, and resources for families. Welcome Ms. Schieffer! SCPMH Newsletter
Parent Portal Access
Keeping our families informed is a high priority at Burdick School. An effective way to do that is by signing up for a parent portal account.
Here’s what to do: Contact Burdick School’s main office to sign up for a Campus Parent Portal account. One of our school secretaries will ask you some questions to verify your identity and your relationship to the child. The secretary will provide you with an activation key for signing up. Once you have registered, you can access the Campus Parent Portal online at mpsmke.com/parentportal or through an Infinite Campus mobile application. The Campus Parent Portal allows 24-hour access to view your child’s:
  • Schedule
  • Assignments
  • Attendance
  • Transportation information
  • Grades
  • Immunizations
  • District messages
