Staff Spotlight
If there’s a Burdick game happening on a Saturday, you can bet Mr. Emmling is there, cheering on our student-athletes! As Burdick’s Assistant Principal, he is a huge advocate for our sports programs, always showing up to support the teams and celebrate their hard work.
Beyond the sidelines, Mr. Emmling brings school spirit to a whole new level. Whether he’s dressing up for Halloween or rocking a funny hat just to brighten everyone’s day, his enthusiasm is contagious. His dedication to Burdick extends beyond the walls of the school—when he’s not here, you’ll likely find him out fishing, enjoying the great outdoors.
Thank you, Mr. Emmling, for your leadership, energy, and commitment to making Burdick a great place for students and staff alike! 🎉🎣🏀 #BurdickPride
1. How long have you worked at Burdick? 6 years
2. What was your favorite school subject when you were a kid, and do you still love it today? Science was my favorite subject in school and I still enjoy being outdoors.
3. If the school had a theme song that played every morning, what song would you choose? “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves
4. What’s your favorite school tradition or event, and why is it special to you? I enjoy attending all of the sporting events as well as the school play production each year and of course the music concerts. It’s nice to see students participating in extracurricular activities and learning skills outside of the classroom setting.
Spring Sports Registration
Spring is right around the corner, which means it’s almost time to sign up for Burdick’s spring sports! Registration will begin at the beginning of March and we encourage families to get your students signed up for a season of teamwork, skill-building, and fun. We are currently offering 1st–3rd grade soccer, 4th–5th grade soccer, 6th–8th grade coed soccer, 6-8th grade girls soccer, 4-5 Coed Softball and 6-8 Coed Softball.
We are also in need of coaches for 1st–3rd grade soccer, 4th–5th grade soccer, and 6th–8th grade coed soccer . If you’re interested in volunteering or have any questions about registration, please reach out to Mr. Williams at willi180@milwaukee.k12.wi.
Let’s make this a great season for our student-athletes! ⚽🎉

Safehaven Policy
At Burdick School, we remain committed to providing a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for all students, families, and staff. We want to reassure our community that our focus remains on education, inclusion, and student well-being.
Since 2017, Milwaukee Public Schools has been a safe haven for students and families of all immigration statuses, and we will continue to offer our full support. We strongly encourage all families to ensure that students attend school every day, as consistent learning is key to their success.
In accordance with federal laws, MPS does not collect or release information about students’ immigration status. If any inquiry regarding this information is made, it will be referred to the Department of Student Services.
If a student ever feels unsafe, anxious, or has concerns during the school day, we encourage them to speak with a trusted adult at school, such as a teacher, counselor, or administrator. We are here to listen and provide support in any way we can.
For additional immigration resources, please visit the MPS website at mpsmke.com/safehaven. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Burdick’s administration.
MPS Sick Child Guidelines🤧
As we navigate cold and flu season, please remember the MPS guidelines for sick children to help keep our school community healthy. If your child has a fever of 100.4°F or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, a persistent cough, or other contagious symptoms, they should stay home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours without medication. If your child tests positive for COVID-19 or another communicable illness, please follow your healthcare provider’s guidance and notify the school.
Thank you for helping us keep Burdick a safe and healthy place for all!
Spring Testing
State required testing begins in March, providing an important opportunity to measure student growth and progress. These assessments help us understand where students are excelling and where they may need additional support.
To set them up for success, ensure they get plenty of rest, eat a good breakfast, and come to school ready to do their best. We appreciate your support in helping students stay focused and confident during this time.
Winter Recess Policy
Burdick’s recess will be held indoors when the temperature, including wind chill, is 10 degrees or lower. Our goal is to have students outside as much as possible, but we understand that not all students may be prepared for the colder weather. If your child is in need of winter gear, please let us know—we’re here to help! Thank you for your understanding and support in keeping all our students safe and comfortable during the winter months.❄️☃️
