February 4, 2025 | News

Greetings Burdick Families!
Well, Punxsutawney Phil has spoken—he saw his shadow, which means we’re in for six more weeks of winter! While that might mean more chilly mornings and bundling up, it won’t slow us down at Burdick. Our classrooms are buzzing with energy, and we have plenty of exciting activities ahead to keep students engaged as we power through the rest of winter together.
February is also Black History Month, a time to honor the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black individuals throughout history. At Burdick, we are celebrating by incorporating lessons, discussions, and activities that recognize Black leaders, innovators, and changemakers. We encourage families to join us in learning and reflecting on the profound impact of Black history, not just this month, but all year long.
Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, thank you for being part of our incredible school community!

Staff Spotlight
Burdick School is lucky to have so many dedicated educators, and one shining example is Ms. Smith, our incredible first-grade teacher! Ms. Smith’s impact reaches far beyond her classroom—she is a driving force behind many of the programs that make our school feel like a family.
She is one of the founding members of the Parent-Teacher Team, and under her support built the strong foundation of connections that still impact our community today. She has also spearheaded fundraising efforts, helping provide valuable resources and opportunities for our students. As the face of our wrap-around care, Ms. Smith makes sure students have a safe, welcoming environment after the school day ends. Ms. Smith doesn’t just know every student—she knows their parents, their grandparents, and probably their pets too. If you think you can get away with something, don’t worry—she’ll be sure to mention it at pickup! Lol!
Her dedication to her students starts before they even enter her classroom—she takes the time to write letters to each incoming first grader, making them feel welcomed and excited for the year ahead. Once in her class, students get to experience her thoughtful projects, designed to spark creativity and a love for learning.
Beyond her many contributions, Ms. Smith is known for her incredible memory—she remembers every student by name and face! She also has a passion for plants, bringing a little extra greenery and warmth into her classroom. And if you know Ms. Smith, you know she’s a proud and loyal member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated♥️🤍❤️.
Thank you, Ms. Smith, for your tireless dedication, kindness, and passion for education. Burdick wouldn’t be the same without you!
1. How long have you worked at Burdick? This is my 34th year.
2. What was your favorite school subject when you were a kid, and do you still love it today? My favorite subject was reading as a child. I still love to read to this day. Last year, I read 46 books. I am always looking for recommendations. 😊
3. If the school had a theme song that played every morning, what song would you choose? My theme song would be “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from the movie Trolls & “Golden” by Jill Scott
4. What’s your favorite school tradition or event, and why is it special to you? My favorite  tradition is our morning class meeting. This tradition helps our class become closer as a family.
Safehaven Policy
At Burdick School, we remain committed to providing a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for all students, families, and staff. We want to reassure our community that our focus remains on education, inclusion, and student well-being.
Since 2017, Milwaukee Public Schools has been a safe haven for students and families of all immigration statuses, and we will continue to offer our full support. We strongly encourage all families to ensure that students attend school every day, as consistent learning is key to their success.
In accordance with federal laws, MPS does not collect or release information about students’ immigration status. If any inquiry regarding this information is made, it will be referred to the Department of Student Services.
If a student ever feels unsafe, anxious, or has concerns during the school day, we encourage them to speak with a trusted adult at school, such as a teacher, counselor, or administrator. We are here to listen and provide support in any way we can.
For additional immigration resources, please visit the MPS website at mpsmke.com/safehaven. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Burdick’s administration.
💛♥️🖤💚MPS Black Lives Matter Week of Action💛♥️🖤💚
Burdick joins schools nationwide in celebrating Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, focusing on the 2025 theme, “Collective Value.” Lessons and activities will highlight Black history, racial justice, and inclusion. MPS provides resources to support classroom learning, art projects, and advocacy. Families can participate by reading books, sharing stories, or discussing the theme at home. Visit https://tinyurl.com/bde5t4py for a sampling of Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action activities and learning opportunities.
MPS Sick Child Guidelines🤧
As we navigate cold and flu season, please remember the MPS guidelines for sick children to help keep our school community healthy. If your child has a fever of 100.4°F or higher, vomiting, diarrhea, a persistent cough, or other contagious symptoms, they should stay home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours without medication. If your child tests positive for COVID-19 or another communicable illness, please follow your healthcare provider’s guidance and notify the school.
Thank you for helping us keep Burdick a safe and healthy place for all!

School Engagement Council Meeting
Join us on Tuesday, February 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Burdick Library for our monthly SEC meeting. Mr. Kubicek will be going through the projected budget for the  2025-2026 School Year.
Spring Testing
State required testing begins in March, providing an important opportunity to measure student growth and progress. These assessments help us understand where students are excelling and where they may need additional support.
To set your child up for success, ensure they get plenty of rest, eat a good breakfast, and come to school ready to do their best. We appreciate your support in helping students stay focused and confident during this time.
Winter Recess Policy
Burdick’s recess will be held indoors when the temperature, including wind chill, is 10 degrees or lower. Our goal is to have students outside as much as possible, but we understand that not all students may be prepared for the colder weather. If your child is in need of winter gear, please let us know—we’re here to help! Thank you for your understanding and support in keeping all our students safe and comfortable during the winter months.❄️☃️
