School Engagement Council (SEC)
School spirit and student enrichment are on the agenda for Parent Teacher Associations and Organizations districtwide. School policies, procedures, and student well-being are the work of School Engagement Councils, established in Milwaukee Public Schools in 1997.
The Burdick School Engagement Council brings together families, staff, students (when appropriate), and community members to support and inform shared leadership that can lead to increased student achievement.
Members of the council:
- Analyze school climate, performance, and budgetary issues.
- Advise school faculty and administration on matters affecting curriculum, student performance, and overall student well-being.
You can participate in our School Engagement Council as a voting member or guest. Email our parent coordinator or principal to suggest agenda topics for an upcoming meeting. Agendas will be posted on our website prior to each meeting.
These meetings are held in the Burdick Library at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. The 2025–26 meeting dates are:
- Tuesday, October 7, 2025
- Tuesday, November 4, 2025

Volunteer Opportunities
Parents and guardians are encouraged to come to Burdick and help students and staff members. Combining support from home with support at school makes for positive results for our students! There are many ways to get involved at Burdick:
Athletic Coaches
Family members can serve as coaches for our athletic teams. This allows us to offer more opportunities for our students to get involved in sports. Find more information about the available athletic teams and what it takes to coach at Burdick.
Classroom, Lunchroom, and Playground Volunteers
We love when our families get involved in their children’s education. Whether it’s in teachers’ classrooms, in the lunchroom, or on the playground, we have endless opportunities for family support.
Field Trip Chaperones
Teachers often ask parents and guardians to serve as chaperones on field trips. Burdick staff are very grateful for these valuable volunteers! All chaperones are given established procedures to provide structure and accountability and to keep students safe when they are away from school.
If you are interested in one of these volunteer opportunities at Burdick, please fill out the MPS Volunteer Application to get started.
