A Message from the GSA Advisors

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Bay View Montessori has an optional student organization called Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) for students in 4th through 8th grade.  Organizations like this play a vital role in making schools safer for LGBTQQIA+ students by providing supportive and accepting spaces. Research shows that the existence of gender and sexuality alliances in schools helps reduce students’ risk of suicidality.  Family support and acceptance are critical to the health and well-being of students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual.

What is GSA?

GSA stands for Gender and Sexuality Alliance.  GSA is a student-led school club in which students can socialize with each other and learn about a variety of different topics and issues, including but not limited to: gender identity, coming out, relationship concerns, bullying, and some of the issues that surround them. GSA is set up just like any other student group, with faculty advisors and regular meetings. Everyone is welcome!

What does GSA do?

Depending on our mission and goals (which we will establish as a group during our first meetings), activities will change week-to-week. GSA provides a social space for students, gives support to students, and allows students to be activists.  Highlights from last school year included walking in the Milwaukee Pride Parade, creating awareness ribbons, and going on a roller skating field trip and a barbecue field trip where students were able to meet students from other MPS GSAs.

When will we meet?

We will meet on Tuesdays during the scheduled lunch and recess hour in Ms. Rodey’s office.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the GSA advisors.

Sincerely,

Amanda Terlizzi,                                             Jenny Rodey,
