6th – 8th grade students are invited to a FREE 6th–8th Grade Dance on Friday, February 27 from 6:30–8:30 PM at Upper Campus.

This is a drop-off event, though parents are welcome to stay if they would like. Food and drinks will be provided free of charge, courtesy of the PTO.

Dress Code: Semi-formal or come dressed in your best Stranger Things-inspired outfit!

We’re excited to offer a fun, safe evening for our middle schoolers to spend time together and celebrate.

If you would like to chaperone or donate waffles or drinks for the dance, please use this Volunteers and Supplies Sign-Up.

Stranger Things Craft Night

We will be hosting a Stranger Things Themed Craft Night on Tuesday, February 24 from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM to create decorations for the dance.

All students are welcome to attend, however students younger than 2nd grade must attend with a parent.

If your student will be attending Craft Night, please be sure to complete the Craft Night Sign-Up form. This helps teachers know where students should go at dismissal and ensures a smooth transition at the end of the day.

* Please note that the school office closes promptly at 4:30 PM. There will be no staff available to open the doors after that time, so please plan accordingly.
* Pick up will be on Dover Ave.

Thank you for helping us make this a memorable event for our school students!

Spring Sports Coaches Needed!

We are already planning for spring athletics, and there is an important deadline we need to meet. MKE REC is requiring all spring coaches to be confirmed by February 27, 2026. Teams without a confirmed coach by that date may be waitlisted, so we are working quickly to secure volunteers.

We are currently looking for head coaches and assistant coaches for the following spring sports:

COED Soccer (Grades 1–3)
COED Soccer (Grades 4–5)
Track & Field (Grades 5–8) – Assistant Coach
COED Tennis (Grades 5–8)
COED T-Ball (Grades 1–3)
COED Softball (Grades 4–5)
COED Softball (Grades 6–8)

If you coached during the fall or winter season, the process to coach again is very simple. Even if you’ve never coached before, please consider stepping in.  Our ability to offer teams depends entirely on having committed coaches.

We cannot guarantee that every team will be registered, as space is first come, first served. However, without a coach, we are unable to offer the team at all.

If you are interested in coaching or would like more information, please email our sports coordinator, Kate at bvmsportco@gmail.com as soon as possible so she can submit names to MKE REC. Thank you for helping us rally around our student athletes!

Note: The Spring Sports Interest Form for families will be shared in upcoming newsletters.

BVM Big Fundraiser – Auction Items Needed

The annual adults only Big Fundraiser is coming up in May, and planning is already underway! In previous years, this special event was organized by the BVM Fund. Last year, the Fund joined forces with the PTO and we’re excited to continue that partnership as we shift gears into a new, more inclusive theme: Donate Through the Decades.  While you’ll still be able to enjoy “the greatest two minutes in sports history” during the Kentucky Derby, this year’s event will also feature games, trivia, and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow BVM parents.

A key part of the evening is our silent auction and we need your help! If you (or someone you know) would be interested in donating a service (prepare a special meal, dog sitting, babysitting, tutoring, etc.), gift cards to local businesses, or tickets, experiences, or unique items families would love to bid on please contact Ms. Ania or you can also reach the PTO directly at bvmptoinc@gmail.com.

And if event planning is more your style, we’d love that too! Let us know if you’d like to join the planning team. Thank you for helping us make this year’s fundraiser a meaningful and memorable event for our entire BVM community.

Bathroom Expectations Reminder

Our engineer, Ms. Donna, has informed us that there have recently been several incidents of wet toilet paper being thrown onto the windows in the boys’ bathroom at Upper Campus. This behavior is inappropriate and considered vandalism. We ask that families please take a moment to speak with your child about respectful and responsible bathroom behavior at school. Restrooms are shared community spaces and should be treated with care. Using materials properly, cleaning up after oneself, and showing respect for school property are important expectations for all students.

If your child has information about who may be involved in these incidents, please encourage them to report it to the office, to Mr. Mark, or to Ms. Ania. Addressing this quickly helps us maintain a clean and respectful environment for everyone.

Our School is a Safe Haven Site.

All district sites are Safe Havens for undocumented students and families.

MPS wants every child to have access to education and all families to feel safe supporting their children’s education needs. We want to ensure that students continue to attend school daily and that families feel safe in attending school events and communicating with school personnel.

MPS Staff are trained to:
• Maintain the privacy of every student and family with regard to immigration status.
• Protect information about students or family members and not share with others.
• Direct any questions or requests for documentation from immigration  officials to appropriate staff at MPS Central Services.

Learn more at mpsmke.com/safehaven. On this page, find:

MPS’s Safe Haven resolution was adopted by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors in April 2017. For the full content of the resolution, see Resolution 1617R-007.

Upcoming Mandatory Emergency Drills

Over the next couple of weeks, each campus will have 2 separate Emergency Drills – one to practice the HOLD protocol and one to practice the SECURE protocol.  These drills are mandatory and just practice drills. Please take a minute to review the MPS Emergency Operations Plan below and this Emergency Actions Info Sheet.

Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) Overview

At Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families is our highest priority. To ensure a coordinated and effective response to any emergency, each school in our district follows a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) developed in partnership with local first responders, public safety agencies, and emergency management professionals.

Districtwide implementation: September 2, 2025

What is the MPS Emergency Operations Plan?

The EOP is a districtwide framework that guides how schools prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies. It outlines roles, responsibilities, and response actions for a wide range of incidents—whether a natural disaster, medical emergency, or security threat.

MPS follows national best practices, including guidelines from:

The U.S. Department of Education

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Wisconsin Department of Justice – Office of School Safety
What the EOP covers

Procedures for:

Evacuation: Safely leaving the building in emergencies like fires or gas leaks.

Lockdown: Securing classrooms and limiting movement due to a threat on or near campus. Hold: Keeping students in classrooms to clear hallways for medical or administrative reasons.

Shelter: Taking cover during severe weather or hazardous materials events.

Reunification: Reconnecting students with families after a crisis.

Communication: Coordinating timely, accurate messaging with families and staff.
Our use of the Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

MPS has adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) across all schools to ensure clear, consistent actions in emergencies. These include:

HOLD – Stay in your room. Clear the halls.

SECURE – Get inside. Lock outside doors.

LOCKDOWN – Locks, lights, out of sight.

EVACUATE – To the announced location.

SHELTER – Using appropriate safety strategies for hazards.

Posters outlining these actions are displayed in every MPS classroom and office.
Drills and preparedness

To build confidence and readiness, schools regularly conduct safety drills, including:

Fire evacuation drills

Lockdown and secure drills

Severe weather shelter drills

Reunification drills (for staff)

Staff also receive ongoing training in crisis response and safety procedures.
What families should know

Keep contact info updated in Infinite Campus.

Wait for instructions during emergencies, do not go to the school unless directed.

Review the SRP actions with your child to reinforce confidence and understanding.

Watch for reunification instructions after any major event.
Speak Up, Speak Out (SUSO)

MPS partners with the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Speak Up, Speak Out (SUSO) program, a 24/7 confidential tip line that allows students, staff, and families to report threats, bullying, or safety concerns.

Website: speakup.widoj.gov

Phone/Text: 1-800-MY-SUSO-1 (1-800-697-8761)
