Green Team

Ready, set, green! The Bay View Montessori School Green Team has been cleaning and greening, growing and going since we set down roots on the lower campus in fall 2013.
  • We strive to make our school an inviting presence in our community through beautification projects, while always striving for sustainability.
  • We are dedicated to maintaining the school’s current green projects, including a focus on recycling, composting, and growing food.
  • We support our students as the driving force behind Green Team plans, projects, and ideas.
  • We are recruiting! Weed our perennial garden, or help us maintain the lower-campus vegetable gardens. Bring us fresh ideas for keeping both campuses clean and green.

Redeveloped Schoolyard – Upper Campus

Working with the environmental education nonprofit Reflo, and city and regional partners as a member of the Green Schools Consortium of Milwaukee, we:

  • Replaced 30,000 square feet of asphalt with all-new green space and plantings, a rainwater harvesting system, student-created signage, and natural design elements that can capture and clear up to 89,850 gallons of stormwater per rain event.
  • Transformed an out-of-date, outdoor recreation space into a flexible, student- and family-friendly schoolyard featuring four outdoor classrooms, a small amphitheater, perennial garden, and courts and fields for basketball, gaga ball, and other team sports.

Lower Campus Schoolyard

Green Team began its sustainability journey in 2013 as we designed, fundraised, and built a cedar fence and perennial garden on the lower campus.

  • Parents and grandparents built the fence and arbor, painted window-well railings, and laid a stone path.
  • Students created stepping stones, and helped gather and plant perennials.
  • ESSER funds accommodated one lower-campus outdoor classroom.

Ten years later, the gardens and Green Team are flourishing. Three new herb and vegetable gardens promote healthy eating and host botany classes for K3 through eighth-grade students.
