The Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR) Program<\/a> supports Wisconsin schools working to close the achievement gap for kindergarten through third-grade students from low-income backgrounds. Schools that receive AGR funding offer extra academic and instructional support, which can include:<\/p>\n Learning Journeys<\/a> are educational field trips for all MPS students that are designed to take what students are learning in the classroom out into the real world. These annual opportunities aim to expand students\u2019 career awareness (K4\u2013grade 3) and help them explore potential careers (grades 4, 5, and 8).<\/p>\n To promote positive student behavior and improve learning, MPS uses a system of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n PBIS is a three-tiered approach that begins by teaching expectations and encouraging collaboration and consistency in classrooms. Teachers and students co-design agreements and routines that align with three districtwide expectations: \u201cBe Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.\u201d For students who need more support, higher tiers offer structure, interventions, and follow-up to address specific concerns.<\/p>\n After years of use, MPS and other districts across the country are reporting higher student achievement, improved school environments, and fewer classroom disruptions and student suspensions.<\/p>\n See Us: Gifted and Talented Program welcomes students from K5 through fourth grade who show above grade-level ability in intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership activities, or in a specific subject(s).<\/p>\n For students from K5 through third grade, SPARK offers one-on-one tutoring sessions and individual lessons to help students read at\/above grade level by the end of third grade. SPARK programming takes place in the classroom, after school, and even in the home. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)<\/h2>\r\nPBIS<\/a> is a joint effort between Milwaukee Public Schools Office of Family Services and the Milwaukee Teachers\u2019 Education Association to effectively reduce classroom disruptions and student suspensions through a school-wide systematic tiered-intervention approach. Data shows that schools that implement PBIS with fidelity see decreases in disruptions and suspensions and increases in student achievement.\r\n
