Students in grades six through eight prepare for high school by changing classes, caring for community, and strengthening math and computer science skills in our GE Innovation Lab. Brightly painted murals of the Tuskegee Airmen, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Maya Angelou greet students and guests. Guided by professional artist educators, our students researched and chose these subjects and helped create the murals. College and university banners line our hallway to inspire students.
Teachers use positivity and planning to help students learn to care for themselves and others during the adolescent years. Each month we explore a new character trait, like empathy or kindness. Incentives and school celebrations reward safe, responsible, and respectful behavior. When students need a break, they head to Douglas Middle School’s dedicated “calming space” to regulate their emotions and write about their experience before returning to class.
“These are middle school kids whose brains and bodies are changing rapidly,” says Principal Zerda Palmer. “We are helping them to build that prefrontal cortex.”
Located in a quiet neighborhood in 53206, Douglas Middle School keeps the lights on during afternoon and evening programs. Free after-school enrichment is available through the Milwaukee Recreation Twilight Center. A Parent Center is open during school hours and professionally staffed. Coffee, school information, and toys for younger siblings are available. The School Engagement Council meets monthly. New parent and family members are always welcome
