As the first MPS school to offer a comprehensive K–8 PLTW program, Fairview is a leader in STEM education. Our PLTW Launch and Gateway programs inspire a passion for design, problem solving, and innovation in all learners.
Grades K5–5: PLTW Launch
Each PLTW Launch module engages students in cross-disciplinary activities that spark a lifelong love of learning. The modules build knowledge and skills in areas like biomedical science, computer science, and engineering.
Our kindergarten through second-grade students explore everything from forces and structures to animal adaptations and human body functions. Students practice teamwork and problem solving as they move through the design process real engineers use! In grades three through five, students explore topics like robotics, computer programming, simple/complex machines, and genetics. They continue to use the design process to solve problems and explore concepts through hands-on activities.
Grades 6–8: PLTW Gateway
At the middle-school level, Fairview students dive deep into advanced PLTW Gateway curriculum:
Design and Modeling
Students explore engineering design principles and bring ideas to life using 3D modeling tools in our brand-new FAB LAB. Projects include designing light switch plates, consumer products, playgrounds, and cell phone cases in AutoCAD. Student designs are selectively printed using a full suite of 3D printers and an on-site fabrication shop.
Automation and Robotics
Students learn about the history and impact of automation and robotics as they explore mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Using the VEX Robotics® platform and RobotC programming language, students apply what they know to design and program traffic lights, robotic arms, and more. Projects include designing automated bridges, self-guiding vehicles, and assembly line production models.
Computer Science for Innovators and Makers
From basic programming to advanced app development, students discover how to harness the power of technology to solve real problems. They begin by learning HTML and CSS coding to create websites from scratch. Then they learn graphic arts and how to create original apps for Android-based devices. Students complete the computer science course by learning how to access APIs to share information and how to break code.
Additional STEM Pathways
Students learn about energy, flight and space, virtual reality, and more—ensuring they all find their spark.
Program Awards
2025–26 PLTW Distinguished Gateway School
For the seventh consecutive year, Fairview was named a PLTW Distinguished Gateway School! This means we are one of the top STEM programs in Wisconsin and the nation—only 18 schools statewide earned this prestigious honor, and we are the only MPS middle school. We’re thrilled to celebrate our commitment to broadening access to real-world, career-connected learning experiences that empower middle schoolers to develop critical thinking and technical skills for the future.
