Plant Sale 3: Not Just Chives This Time-May 29 and 30th

Did you eat something green today?  The Fernwood Greenhouse program is running a plant sale on May 29th and 30th after school that can help you with this very dilemma!   Vegetables and herbs will be $4 cash.  GORGEOUS planters will be available for $20-30.  The sale is in the greenhouse so each purchase (or non-purchase) comes with a free tour of this facility!  Proceeds go to the Fernwood greenhouse program which benefits all students.

Extra Yearbooks for Sale-We still have some!!

LOST and FOUND-Clean Out on June 11th

Are you looking for a 5T orange Columbia fleece?  We probably have it!  The lost and found will be cleaned out on June 11th.  Please come to claim items before that date.  The lost and found is located under the Northeast stairwell in the basement.

Last Popcorn Sale of the Year on 5/31

The last popcorn sale of the year will be held on 5/31.  This was a huge success for our adolescent program. Thanks to all who bought popcorn this year!  If you need help making microwave popcorn this summer, the Swedish Chef offers a tutorial below.

Pirate Girls Last Soccer Games

Is Giannis going to be the league MVP this year?  Did the Bucks curse their season when they traded Jrue?  If you can talk intelligently about these topics, then you should definitely put that energy towards watching the girls 6-8th grade soccer team play their last two matches this week!  Go Pirates!  

Game 1 is Tuesday May 28 at 6:15pm at Lincoln Playfield.  

Game 2, the finale, is Thursday May 30 at 7:15pm at Lincoln Playfield.

Fall Girls Basketball for 6th-8th Graders

After having fun and winning our league last year, Girls 6-8th basketball is back for another season in the Fall 2024. 

At this time, we expect that practices will be from 3-4 on Mondays and Wednesdays which will not conflict with cross country practice. The first practice likely will be Monday September 9th. All practices will be in the Fernwood gym. Games are expected to be on Saturdays starting at the end of September.

Construction Happening Soon-KK Ave Impacted

Please note that some construction will be happening on our West Playground right along KK Ave soon.  If parents drop off on KK Ave, we ask that you please access the building in a different way while construction is happening.  We don’t have an exact date for the start of the project but it will be happening in the coming weeks.

Run Back to School Registration now Open!

Fernwood took first place in last year’s annual Run Back to School 5K run/1.5 mile walk by having the most registered participants in the district!  Let’s do it again and win the $1,000 grant!  Please see details on the attached flyer, including how to register your family.  Be sure to list ‘Fernwood’ as your participating school.  Any questions, please contact Fernwood’s team captain, Lisa McLure, at samperld@milwaukee.k12.wi.us.

Transition Information for Students Moving to a New Level Next Year

Fernwood put together some helpful videos for families to understand what the transition looks like from the previous to the next level.  These videos will be helpful for families of current K5, 3rd, and 6th grade students:

Fernwood students in grades K5, 3rd and 6th grade will have the opportunity to participate on May 23rd in our experience day.  Families can expect to receive supply lists and class placements/homerooms (for 7th and 8th grade) on the last day of school sent home with report cards.  At the end of August when teachers return, families should expect to hear from the new teachers about procedures, communication, expectations, etc.

Chrome Book Collection Dates

We will be collecting Chrome Books and chargers from our students before the end of the school year.  Please ensure Chrome Books and chargers are sent to school with your child on the below date:  

Lower Elementary Students (1st-3rd)- May 29th

Upper Elementary Students (4th-6th)- May 30th

Primary Students (K3-K5)- May 31st

Additional collection date: June 3rd

Secondary Students (7th and 8th)- June 11th

Our School is Cool!

There’s always something COOL going on at Fernwood!  Taylor Swift in the Library!?!?  Bikes in the Art Room?!?!

To assist Taylor Swift with total world domination, Mr. Grant read the students a poem….which was later revealed to be an award winning poem written by Ms. Swift when she was a 5th grader.  Minds blown!  The kids then were invited to write their own poems as part of Mr. Grant’s celebration of Poetry Month.   The library may be quiet and organized but it’s also COOL!  

A COOL thing also happened in the Art Room this week!  Students were able to use charcoal, graphite, and pencil to do a study on positive and negative space while drawing bikes in Art class.  When you see an empty classroom with bikes up on the tables, you have to ask about it, right? See below for pictures.
