Special Friends Day 2025
April 25th is Special Friends’ Day at Fernwood. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to invite guests (Grandma! Grandpa! Auntie! Your Mailman!) to visit their classrooms during one of two morning sessions, 8:45-9:15am or 9:30-10:00am. Students will be able to share work that they are proud of and demonstrate some of their lessons.
We ask that all guests enter through the glass doors on Falling Heath Place. Please send in an RSVP form to your student’s teacher by April 22th if your student has a guest that will be attending.
It is also VERY helpful if the special friends already know the room numbers of the classrooms they are going to be visiting. We have HUGE numbers of people show up and if our guests know their room numbers (written on a piece of paper) then this takes a step out of the process of getting them where they need to go!
We will be looking for volunteers to help make this fun day a success. Please consider coming in to help (did I mention we have HUGE numbers of people show up?)!

Order Your 2024-25 Yearbook!
2024-2025 Fernwood yearbooks are available for ordering now! This year our cover features artwork by talented Fernwood 8th grader, Magnolia Hall! Inside you can see pictures of your Fernwood student learning, doing, making art, making music, and having fun! Often Fernwood teachers shower, brush their hair, and wear make up on picture day…so much beauty! Some Fernwood adolescents passed around the same sweatshirt to like four different kids (same body, different head)…..don’t miss these moments of once-a-year personal hygiene and charming preteen shenanigans!
Please go to
ybpay.com to order. Our yearbook ID code is 14852525. Yearbooks are $12 and you can order as many as you want (perhaps to sell extras on the Fernwood underground economy, see the next sentence). Please note that online ordering is your only opportunity to order one. After April 14th, you cannot order any additional or extra yearbooks. Yearbooks are delivered in May (they will be sent home as soon as possible, please trust the process).

Fernwood Flights 2025 – It Takes a Village!
Did you know that the Fernwood Fund plays a vital role in providing amazing educational programs, exciting field trips, and enhancements to our learning environment?…or even sometimes funding student and staff morale-boosting treats and activities when we get blindsided by something like an unexpected school relocation!!!
As we gear up for Fernwood Flights, our end-of-year celebration and fundraiser on June 8th, we need your help to make this event a huge success! Do you own a business or have access to unique experiences? Perhaps a vacation spot or timeshare you’d be willing to donate? Or maybe you have tickets to a sporting event, or something totally unexpected that could make a great auction item? We’re looking for everything from local goods and services to one-of-a-kind experiences!
Not only will your donation—eligible for a tax deduction—help support our school, but it’s also a fantastic way to showcase your business to our Bay View community. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference and ensures that we can continue to offer and expand the programs that benefit our students. Check out

OUR SCHOOL IS COOL!
There’s always something COOL going on at Fernwood!
Green House Director Mr. Matt “Retired But Not” Ray is around saying things like “it is only an adventure if something goes wrong.” Nothing is going wrong here at Fernwood North…but our stay at Douglas has been extended another week. Mr. Ray is still here being helpful and dropping wisdom…will his reign of terror never END???
This last week there was a lot of COOL learning happening with students at home!
This student in Ms. Farmer’s class is sorting silverware like a PRO!
Can’t keep a Fernwood kid (from Ms. Foster’s class) out of the woods!
Bead work makes the dream work in Ms. Weatherbee’s class!
Cameron in Ms. McLure’s class is practicing some cursive like a BOSS!
Here’s some more pictures of COOL stuff that happened at Fernwood North over the last couple days!
The art cart got an upgrade by super art room volunteer and Fernwood parent, Katrina Steibs. Pretty and COOL! I thought the art cart was just fulfilling Ms. Makula’s dreams of being a flight attendant but Ms. Makula is using the cart to cut out the set up and clean up time for art class here at Fernwood North. When the kids are super engaged in their projects, Ms. Makula can leave them working and move on to the next classroom. Ms. Makula is a sweet, nice lady but she is also capable of diabolically manipulating Fernwood students into extra art time! COOL!
‘Pac says keep your head up, Fernwood!
Vintage map of Milwaukee with all the public schools marked.
Just where we left it!
Daily to do list!
I think everyone is going to be a flower dissection expert by the end of our field trip!
Rainbow mini-library! 🌈
Adolescent agenda! You got this!
Sentence mapping in Ms. Kelsey’s room.
I don’t know if this is actually true. It must be dessert pizza, right? This actually supports my theory that Ms. Kelsey is a distant cousin of Willy Wonka.
Lots of to dos!
Poetry in Room 333 (also known as Ms. Clay’s room).
Variations on a theme!
Ms. Kim! Looks JUST like her!
Ms. Hayley making pudding pie in Ms. Sangita’s class!
Ms. Makula teaching art on the smart board and the white board. All the boards!
This is the sign I made for Ms. Jamie’s class.
This is the sign Ms. Jamie’s class made themselves! Upgrade!
Montessori work in Ms. Kellie’s class with paper towels and colored water!
Parent musicians came to perform! He picked the biggest instrument and she picked the smallest one!
Mr. J teaching in his giant classroom (this shows like half the width)! He can extend his arms alllllll the way out!
Another parent volunteer presenting on bike and pedestrian safety in Ms. Jen’s class. Overheard….”At my grandma’s house there are no sidewalks!”
Ms. Major working hard in the hallway!
Primary students were able to attend some ACE programming about conducting music (thanks Fernwood Fund for providing this programming)! Ms. Ceballos took this photo from the last row of the auditorium during the program! Our tiniest students, even tinier!
A parent volunteer helping out with Beach Day in Room 26. Some students were disappointed to discover that Beach Day meant beach themed activities not a day at the actual beach….there are many amenities at Fernwood North, but a wave pool and sand beach is not available.
So many COOL happenings! Thanks to the students, staff, and families for all their resiliency these past days! Going with the flow is COOL. Trying something new is COOL. Teamwork is COOL.
***Please note a correction from the newsletter from 3/18/25. The social justice mural project that was worked on by Ms. Sangita’s class was also worked on by Ms. Kim Milligan’s class. Classes joining together is so COOL! Not recognizing the hard work of a group of students is NOT COOL! My apologies to Room 32 for this oversight! Great work, y’all!
