Attendance at Fernwood

MPS has a district goal this year that each school will have at least 95% attendance.   Fernwood’s year to date attendance is 93.6%.   Let’s see if as a school community we can raise that number!   There are only 15 school attendance days in the month of April!  Let’s see if we can get our students in school for all of those 15 days.  (Side note, we know that kids get sick, please continue to keep your kids at home when they are not well.)

Reminder: Recapturing Attendance Due to Illness

If your child is sick and is able to do some work (we trust families’ judgment on this), please inform Principal Lowell that work has been completed for a given day at lowellkm@milwaukee.k12.wi.us and attendance will be recaptured.  If you need work options, please additionally email Ms. Lowell and she will provide you with a list of options from the classroom teacher.

Thank you for your diligence in keeping your child home when they are sick to prevent the spread of illness.

Save the date for the return of this fun event.

To assist in advertising the event there will be yard signs available starting the week of April 1st. If you would like to pick up a sign during the week of spring break or have one put on your lawn please contact Barb Durkin at 773-849-2209. Signs will be available at the school after Spring Break.

Fernwood Flights

Save the date! June 11th from 11 to 3 at The Sugar Maple.

Fernwood Flights is the primary fundraiser for the Fernwood Fund which provides financial support for programs with the Urban Ecology Center and Schlitz Audubon, the outdoor grounds at Fernwood including the greenhouse and surrounding garden beds, the music program, supporting trips to Camp Edwards and many more. Spend an afternoon with fellow parents and support Fernwood at the same time!

Spring Concert

This message is in regards to the upcoming Fernwood spring concert. Unfortunately, Bay View High School needs their auditorium to store items for construction elsewhere in the building, so our plan A to have our concert there is a bust. Our plan B was to hold the concert in our gym so that we could have one night of performances, accommodating all of the families (and not have them packed like sardines). But it turns out renting the chairs will be too costly and the logistics behind transporting the risers, sound system, etc will be too great. Plus we would be compromising Mr. Comp’s teaching space.

Introducing plan C. The concert will be held in the Fernwood auditorium on May 18th. Students should arrive at 4:30pm and the concert will start at 5pm. In order to ensure that certain fire codes are followed (and our families are not squished), we will have to make an adjustment to our list of performers. Our 2023 spring concert will include the following groups: lower elementary choir (after-school with Ms. Molly), upper elementary choir, adolescent rock bands, and the 3rd grade recorder group. We will not have all the lower elementary classes performing like we did for the winter concert. In the future, we hope to incorporate more upper elementary and adolescent classes and eventually the entire school. But we will work up to that.

For the concert, we are looking for parent volunteers to help monitor students and usher them onto the stage. If this sounds like something you are interested in please sign up here.
