Fernwood Open House on 2/12
There are three rules for having a Montessori teacher.
-
They don’t like bright lights. Truth: Most of them prefer ambient lighting.
-
Never get them wet. Have you ever seen one in a swimsuit?
-
And never, ever, feed them after 5pm. This is hard because they are almost always hungry!
Please come to school from 5pm-6:30pm on February 12th for an Open House for new and returning students! Classrooms will be open and showing student work! Teachers will be available for questions! If you want to bring a flashlight, a squirt gun, and some brownies for your teacher something fun might happen!*
*Please don’t actually squirt them with water. They would love brownies, though!

Fernwood Spring Athletics
Spring Athletics are fast approaching. Session dates are not set yet but typically run through April and into the first week of June.
Spring offerings:
Girls Middle School Soccer (6-8th grade) – please look for the electronic registration form in an upcoming newsletter mid-February.
Co-Ed Soccer (4-5th grade) –If your child played in the fall re-registration is NOT required, however, please reach out to your coach and let them know if you will be returning.
Co-Ed Soccer (1-3rd grade) – If your child played in the fall re-registration is NOT required, however, please reach out to your coach and let them know if you will be returning.
In the fall we had VERY large soccer teams, and had to turn away quite a few kids as well. In order to make teams a more manageable size and to allow other kids a chance to join in the spring we are in need of an additional coach for co-ed soccer 1-3rd grade. Please let me know if you are interested ASAP. Unless we get another coach, we will not be able to admit additional players.
If you are interested in coaching Track and Field or a Co-ed 6-8th grade soccer team please let me know ASAP. *We have a number of students interested in being a part of Track and Field team, so if you are at all interested please reach out, the students would greatly appreciate it!! We have other great coaches that would be happy to help anyone new to coaching navigate the process*
Thank you to all the coaches and families for making Fernwood Athletics such a success!

OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR INCOMING K3 STUDENTS
Attention ALL parents of future K3 students! If you have a child who will be turning 3 by 9/1/25, then you need to complete the MPS open enrollment process if you want them to attend school in the Fall of 2025. The enrollment window is February 1st, 2025 to March 17th, 2025. Siblings of current Fernwood students WILL get a spot at Fernwood, but you still need to submit the enrollment paperwork so we know to give them a spot here in the Fall. MPS does not have any way to check on younger siblings (through birth records or similar) and hold spots. Thus, parents must enroll to indicate that they have a student who is ready to start school. If you have any questions about this process, please call the office. No pirate left behind!

A Morning of Montessori Event
A wise Montessorian once told me that we here at Fernwood are part of a long history of Montessori in Milwaukee (and really globally). We are stewards of this tradition and a chapter of this story…..
Please join our community at the district wide Morning of Montessori Event (formerly the Montessori Summit) at McDowell Montessori on 2/8. Anyone and everyone is invited! This event and celebration showcases what Montessori in MPS does through presentations, glass classrooms, and information sharing! Childcare available! See below for details.
Please note that the glass classroom observation rooms for Lower El will be hosted by Ms. Kelsey McCarron and Ms. Jen Sarnowski and feature students from their classrooms. Please stop by to support our teachers and students as they give a live example of what a Montessori classroom looks like in action!

OUR SCHOOL IS COOL!
There’s always something COOL going on at Fernwood! This week, I bring you vintage COOL (kinda like me!) from December 2024! Students in Ms. Sangita’s class went on a very COOL going out in December 2024 to City Hall! Students left Bayview (brave!) to meet with Milwaukee Mayor (he’s like Ms. Kristy but for the entire city), Batman enthusiast, Bayview High School graduate (!!), and MPS Parent (he’s one of us!) Cavalier Johnson. I can only assume these pint sized political operatives talked about the brilliance of Maria Montessori, mock chicken leg, getting Milwaukee to 1,000,000 residents, and the fact that Milwaukee is the only American city to elect three Socialist mayors (
https://youtu.be/nRCTc6stICc?feature=shared).
Our amazing students saw a Milwaukee guy working hard to make our little city by a big lake a better place! A Milwaukee guy saw some amazing kids going bravely out into the world to learn new things and ask questions about how government works! Keep being COOL, Mayor Johnson! Keep being COOL, Fernwood!
