Fernwood Montessori students exceed expectations on our school’s state report card, and their academic achievements are supported by involved parents and community sponsors. Families come together to provide enriching extracurricular activities and programs through our Parent Teacher Organization, School Engagement Council, Parent Athletic Council, Music Parents, and Fernwood Fund groups. Located in a walkable, bikeable neighborhood near Lake Michigan’s south shore, our school enjoys fundraising and field-trip partnerships with nearby restaurants and environmental organizations. Our schoolyard has gardens, a classroom, and amphitheater so teachers can present outdoor science lessons and nature and nutrition classes.

Fernwood History
Founded in 1983 as a K3 through fifth-grade school, Fernwood Montessori School made its first home at 35th and Mitchell streets under the name Greenfield Montessori School. Beginning in 1995, the school welcomed adolescent students. In 2001, the Greenfield Montessori program relocated to a district building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood, became Fernwood Montessori School, and took on the “Pirates” mascot.
“Our school name was changed from Greenfield Montessori School to Fernwood Montessori School out of respect for the history and traditions of the 94-year-old school that became the current home of our Montessori program,” explains Fernwood Montessori Principal Kristen Lowell.
