Schools that receive AGR funding implement key strategies in their kindergarten through third-grade classrooms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small class sizes of 18:1 or 30:2<\/li>\n<li>One\u2212to\u2212one tutoring provided by a licensed teacher<\/li>\n<li>Instructional coaching for teachers provided by a licensed teacher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Forward Scholars<\/h2>\n<p>Forward Scholars supports kindergarten through third-grade students who need one-on-one support to reach grade-level benchmarks in reading proficiency. Forest Home students and Forward tutors team up in the classroom two hours per week.<\/p>\n<h2>Junior Achievement of Wisconsin<\/h2>\n<p>We have a strong partnership with the\u202fJunior Achievement of Wisconsin\u202fprogram, which inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy. Junior Achievement of Wisconsin provides activities, guides, field trips, and other resources to share lessons on leadership, career preparation, money management, and more. Lessons are organized according to the Milwaukee Public Schools Social Studies curriculum and are implemented in K5 classrooms, continuing through fifth grade.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Journeys<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mpsmke.com\/learningjourneys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learning Journeys<\/a> are educational field trips for all MPS students that are designed to take what students are learning in the classroom out into the real world. These annual opportunities aim to expand students\u2019 career awareness (K3\u2013grade 3) and help them explore potential careers (grades 4 and 5).<\/p>\n<h2>LibraryCorps Program<\/h2>\n<p>The Milwaukee Public Library LibraryCorps Program helps young people develop a love of reading, increase information literacy skills, and establish relationships that bridge the gap between in- and out-of-school learning.\u00a0LibraryCorps mentors visit Forest Home Avenue School on Thursdays to share the power of literacy during lessons curated especially for fourth and fifth graders.<\/p>\n<h2>Project Lead The Way (PLTW)<\/h2>\n<p>Project Lead The Way supports our teachers in incorporating project-based math, science, and technology learning, and encourages every child to explore \u2014 and believe they can succeed in \u2014 jobs in technology and engineering fields. Learn more at <a href=\"https:\/\/mpsmke.com\/pltw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mpsmke.com\/pltw<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>SHARP Literacy<\/h2>\n<p>SHARP Literacy energizes urban school children to become confident, capable readers, writers and researchers, using the visual arts to engage young minds and reinforce learning. Providing them with opportunities to develop a wide range of skills \u2013 reading, writing, oral communications, research, creative thinking and problem solving \u2013 SHARP creates a solid foundation for future learning and success. On pre-and post-vocabulary tests, SHARP students improve their literacy skills between 40 and 70 percent.<\/p>\n<h2>We Energies STEM Center at MSOE<\/h2>\n<p>Students visit the Milwaukee School of Engineering to engage in hands-on STEM projects and meet role models whose expertise and experience are a perfect fit for Forest Home\u2019s STEM-focused academic program.<\/p>\n<h2>Wisconsin Reading Corps<\/h2>\n<p>Tutors provide 100 minutes of one-on-one, weekly reading support to students who are working toward reading proficiency by the end of grade three and need extra help getting there. For America to remain economically competitive, our next generation of leaders \u2014 the students of today \u2014 must develop the critical-reasoning and problem-solving skills that will help make them the most productive in the world. The PLTW curriculum is founded in the fundamental problem-solving and critical-thinking skills taught in traditional career and technical education (CTE), but at the same time integrates national academic and technical learning standards and STEM principles, creating what U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan calls one of the \u201cgreat models of the new CTE succeeding all across the country.\u201d PLTW was recently cited by the Harvard Graduate School of Education as a \u201cmodel for 21st century career and technical education.\r\n\r\n<h2>Common Core State Standards<\/h2>\r\nThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/corestandards.org\/the-standards\">Common Core State Standards<\/a>\u00a0Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.\r\n\r\nThe standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world, and provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. Consistent standards will provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live.\r\n\r\nThese standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs.
