Programs at Benjamin Franklin School enrich learning through hands-on experiences, leadership opportunities, cultural enrichment, and more.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
This federally funded program supports student and community health by increasing the volume and variety of fruits and vegetables that children are introduced to. Twice a week, students receive fresh fruits and veggies as a snack (separate from breakfast and lunch). The program also teaches them about nutrition.
Junior Coach Program
The Junior Coach Program is a youth leadership program open to fourth through eighth graders at Franklin. Junior Coaches support their peers during recess, ensuring that all students feel welcomed and involved in playground activities. Through monthly training sessions, they learn how to serve as peer role models and develop skills like responsibility, effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. Our Junior Coaches highlight the positive impact that young people can have on our school community.
Ko-Thi Dance Company’s DrumTalk Workshop
Every year, Ko-Thi Dance Company comes to Franklin for a day of African and Caribbean dancing and drumming. This unique cultural experience is a vibrant and engaging way to connect with African traditions. Students are invited to perform in the event, fostering an appreciation for diversity and global perspectives.
Learning Journeys
Learning Journeys are educational field trips for all MPS students that are designed to take what students are learning in the classroom out into the real world. These annual opportunities aim to expand students’ career awareness (K4–grade 3) and help them explore potential careers (grades 4, 5, and 8).
PLTW (Project Lead The Way)
Franklin students in grades six through eight participate in PLTW Gateway. We offer three courses for our middle schoolers:
Design and Modeling
Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They are then challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout the unit to design a therapeutic toy for a child who has cerebral palsy.
Automation and Robotics
Students learn about the history and impact of automation and robotics as they explore mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Using the VEX Robotics® platform, students apply what they know to design and program traffic lights, robotic arms, and more.
Computer Science for Innovators and Makers
Students will learn about programming for the physical world by blending hardware design and software development, allowing them to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable projects.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
To promote positive student behavior and improve learning, MPS uses a system of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
PBIS is a three-tiered approach that begins by teaching expectations and encouraging collaboration and consistency in classrooms. Teachers and students co-design agreements and routines that align with three districtwide expectations: “Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.” For students who need more support, higher tiers offer structure, interventions, and follow-up to address specific concerns.
After years of use, MPS and other districts across the country are reporting higher student achievement, improved school environments, and fewer classroom disruptions and student suspensions.
