Class sizes are smaller from K4 to third grade through the Achievement Gap Reduction program. Technology, student-led discussion and inquiry, field trips, group presentations, and solo projects give students many opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills. Weekly art, music, and physical education classes and our social and emotional curriculum contribute to a well-rounded K-8 education for all learners. At Grantosa Drive School, we educate the whole child.

Ambitious Instruction Plan

The Milwaukee Public Schools Ambitious Instruction Plan recognizes and celebrates that our students come from many cultures and backgrounds. This plan focuses on high-quality, culturally appropriate teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that every student develops reading, writing, and math skills in ways that are meaningful to their individual lives and experiences. Our staff works together to understand each learner and find appropriate ways to assess and improve their progress. We then make sure that students can apply what they have learned in productive ways in school and in their community.

Common Core State Standards

The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.

Curriculum

Art, Library, Music, and Physical Education

Specialist teachers lead weekly art, music, and physical education classes so students can explore mind-body wellness, find their creative voice, and vision, and even perform at school events and community concerts.

Students visit our library and media center to strengthen their reading and research skills using technology. Exploring our collection of children’s literature, nonfiction titles, and periodicals helps students develop literacy skills and a lifelong love for learning.

Reading/Language Arts

Reading is a priority at Grantosa Drive School. Students from K4 through fifth grade are taught reading, writing, and oral language for 90 minutes a day, and students in grades six through eight are taught for 60 minutes daily.

Math

Math skill building and conceptual development matters at Grantosa Drive School. Teachers provide individualized attention as students build a strong foundation in math: whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and decimals. Students rely on this solid foundation as they learn and apply more demanding mathematical concepts in high school.

Special Education

MPS serves all children with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, hearing, learning, physical, speech, and vision disabilities. The school’s special education teachers, regular education teachers, school social worker, school psychologist, and administration work together to meet students’ needs.

If you think your child has special education needs, ask your child’s teacher or principal for an evaluation. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.

The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world, and provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. Consistent standards will provide appropriate benchmarks for all students, regardless of where they live.

These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs. The standards:

Are aligned with college and work expectations;

Are clear, understandable and consistent;

Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;

Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards;

Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and

Are evidence-based.

Looking for a way to support your scholar in Reading and Math?
