Alexander Hamilton High School offers dynamic academic programs that prepare students for college, careers, and beyond.

Bilingual Education

Our bilingual program serves approximately 160 native Spanish speakers. The program offers a great opportunity for students in grades nine and 10 to maintain fluency in Spanish, preserve their culture and traditions, and learn a second language. By junior year, students are ready to transition to receiving all instruction in English.

The bilingual courses offered through our program are:

  • English: (9 and 10)
  • Math: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2 and Trig
  • Science: Biology
  • Social Studies: Word History, Citizenship

Instruction is provided in both English and Spanish, and bilingual paraprofessionals are available to assist students. We also offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes that range from newcomer through advanced, as well as Spanish for Spanish Speakers and AP Spanish Language and Culture.

Seal of Biliteracy

This industry-recognized credential is awarded to students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more additional languages by high school graduation.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Training and Certification

In collaboration with Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), Hamilton students can earn college credit and acquire their CNA certification through in-school labs and courses. Hamilton is one of only four MPS schools to offer this opportunity, which is taken as an elective.

College Readiness

PEOPLE

PEOPLE is the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence. It is designed to help students progress toward high school graduation and prepare for an enriching college experience. Beginning in ninth grade, accepted students are assigned a Precollege Advisor to assist them throughout their educational journey. Ninety-four percent of PEOPLE high school graduates enroll in higher education.

TRIO & Pre-College at UW-Milwaukee

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s TRIO & Pre-College Programs promote academic excellence in high school and support college access for first-generation, low-income, and other underrepresented students. Eligible MPS students who participate will receive access to educational resources, services, and opportunities, including tutoring, academic skill development, college visits, and residential experiences.

Wisconsin GEAR UP

The Wisconsin GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs program aims to increase the number of low-income students who prepare for and succeed in postsecondary education. Students in grades six through twelve get access to one-on-one advising, guidance about college and career readiness, college visits, and more. The program also offers personalized mentoring that begins in senior year and continues through their first year of college. Eligible students can apply for the GEAR UP Scholarship to help make college possible.

Freshman Bridge

The two-day Freshman Bridge program is designed to help incoming ninth graders prepare for a great first year of high school. By attending Freshman Bridge, students learn how to get ready for the first day of class, settle in quickly, and find any support they need.

Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG)

The Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program empowers our students with the skills and support needed to succeed in education, employment, and life. As one of only three MPS schools with this program, Hamilton is a leader in preparing students for life after graduation. This work-based elective class focuses on soft skills, resume creation, and core working skills in areas like construction.

PLTW: Project Lead The Way

PLTW is the nation’s leading provider of K–12 STEM programs. This nationally established program focuses on preparing the future technical and engineering workforce.

Students who take PLTW classes can earn college credit by examination at the end of each course. Hamilton offers two PLTW pathways:

PLTW Biomedical Science

In PLTW Biomedical Science, high school students build knowledge and skills by working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs. Along the way, they develop skills in problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, and collaboration.

Principles of Biomedical Science

By engaging in activities such as dissecting a sheep heart, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person.

Human Body Systems

Through projects such as determining the identity of a skeleton using both forensic anthropology and DNA analysis, students examine the interactions of human body systems and apply what they know to solve real-world medical cases.

Medical Interventions

Students delve into activities such as designing a prosthetic arm as they follow the life of a fictional family and investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.

Biomedical Innovation

Students build on the knowledge and skills gained from previous courses to design their own innovative solutions for the most pressing health challenges of the 21st century. They have the opportunity to work on an independent project with a mentor or advisor from a university, medical facility, or research institution.

PLTW Computer Science

Empower your students to become creators of the technology all around them. PLTW Computer Science engages students in collaborative projects that help them develop in-demand computer science knowledge as well as transportable skills, such as creative thinking and communication. Whether they are creating an online art gallery or using automation to process and analyze DNA sequence data, PLTW Computer Science students are seeing how their learning connects to the real world.

Computer Science Essentials

With emphasis on computational thinking and collaboration, this yearlong course provides an excellent entry point for students to begin or continue the PLTW Computer Science pre-K–12 experience. Computer Science Essentials will expose students to a diverse set of computational thinking concepts, fundamentals, and tools, allowing them to gain understanding and build confidence.

Computer Science Principles

Using Python® as a primary tool, students learn the fundamentals of coding, data processing, data security, and task automation while learning to contribute to an inclusive, safe, and ethical computing culture. The course promotes computational thinking and coding fundamentals and introduces computational tools that foster creativity. Computer Science Principles helps students develop programming expertise and explore the workings of the Internet. Projects and problems include app development, visualization of data, cybersecurity, and simulation.
