Every exterior green space and classroom corner at Hawley Environmental School is designed to nurture students’ academic and emotional well-being. Students learn and play outdoors, which inspires creativity and teaches them to find calm and connection in nature. Learning about nutrition comes naturally as students plant seeds in the school greenhouse, work with teachers to transplant them to raised-bed gardens, and enjoy Hawley-grown goods at snack time. Families and staff come together for school wellness nights, and parents chaperone field trips to parks and nature preserves. Family involvement continues after school as caregivers read to children at home, help with homework, and join the School Engagement Council. Community connections with Marquette University High School, SHARP Literacy, and Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church bring more role models to the school for one-on-one and group tutoring in literacy and math.
