Our school, staff, and students are continuously enriched by their ongoing gifts of time, services and resources, creativity and collaboration.<\/p>\n
Green & Healthy Schools Wisconsin connects, cultivates, and celebrates schools for nurturing healthy kids and sustainable communities. Public and private schools statewide report achievements through an annual survey each fall and receive recognition as a Sprout, Seedling, Sapling, or a Sugar Maple School based on cumulative results. Green & Healthy Schools Wisconsin is administered by the Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources and Public Instruction and supported by partners across the state.<\/p>\n
Students from Marquette University High School provide one-on-one tutoring to Hawley students. Through this program, Hawley students gain self-confidence and practice math and literacy strategies that support their academic goals.<\/p>\n
Annually, Reflo works with partners including Milwaukee Public Schools, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, the City of Milwaukee, the Fund for Lake Michigan, Community Design Solutions and others to support Milwaukee-area schools in an intensive, collaborative process to design and then redevelop greener, healthier schoolyards. Hawley Environmental School\u2019s redeveloped schoolyard opened in 2019.<\/p>\n
Each redevelopment project is tailored to the specific needs and enthusiasm of the school\u2019s community but often involves replacing seas of asphalt with green infrastructure including bioswales, rain gardens, and trees as well as outdoor classrooms, improved recreational facilities and arts opportunities. Designs go beyond removing pavement to maximize benefits for communities, the environment, and local economy.<\/p>\n
The University of Wisconsin Extension Master Gardener Program supports a network of individuals dedicated to horticulture education, service, and lifelong learning. Through unbiased, research-based horticulture training, they are equipped to address needs and opportunities in their community and throughout the state. Master Gardeners returned to Hawley in spring 2024 to share their expertise with students and teachers who keep the school’s prairie, raised bed, and sensory gardens thriving.<\/p>\n
A partner and neighbor to our school since 2018, Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church (WAUMC) has hosted winter-clothing drives and attendance celebrations, donated school supplies, and even coordinated a scholarship program for Hawley students. In 2023-24, more than 30 WAUMC members will volunteer during the school day as literacy and math tutors.<\/p>\n
