Cultural celebrations and special events spotlight student creativity and scholarship and are great opportunities to meet other Hawthorne Hawks families. Don\u2019t miss our Read Across America and Black History Month Wax Museum projects. Meet school staff and volunteers during our annual open house, harvest fest, and family prom.<\/p>\n
We are always looking for more caring, motivated individuals to join our volunteer team. Neighbors, retired educators, nonprofit partners, and community leaders provide one-on-one and small group tutoring to students. Please contact our parent coordinator to learn about classroom and field-trip opportunities or get started by completing an MPS volunteer application<\/a>.<\/p>\n Families can stay informed on and share ideas about the district\u2019s Title I programs and priorities during monthly council meetings. Each school sends two delegates to meetings; alternates may attend as well.<\/p>\n The Hawthorne SEC provides a forum for parents, teachers, community members, students, and principals to work together in providing continued analysis and improvement of public-school policies, curriculum, and School Improvement Plan. Our School Engagement Council meets on the second Thursday of the month from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.<\/p>\n Stay in touch with your child\u2019s teacher and stay up to date on their academic goals and accomplishments. Attendance<\/h2>\r\nAttendance is very important at Hawthorne Elementary School. Please make sure that your child(ren) are at school, on time, every day. The school day starts at 7:25 a.m. and ends at 2:10 p.m. If your child(ren) will be absent, please make sure to let the office know by calling (414) 247-7200. Assist Your Child with Homework<\/h2>\r\nYour child\u2019s teacher will communicate with you about the type of homework that is appropriate for your child. Be sure to provide a quiet time and place for homework.\r\n
Help Your Child Improve Their Scores<\/h2>\r\nPrograms used in the classroom can be utilized by your child at home to help them improve academically. Have your student login through Clever<\/a> to find all programs they can access including Smarty Ants, My Path, Discovery Education, Flocabulary, etc.\r\n
Discuss Your Child\u2019s Progress with Their Teachers<\/h2>\r\nAttend parent\/teacher conferences, or arrange for a special conference with your child\u2019s teacher. If time does not permit, a phone call or a brief note is appreciated.\r\n\r\nFamilies play a vital role in education. Parents are encouraged to work with teachers to decide on an appropriate time to visit their child\u2019s classroom, discuss student progress and share ways to increase learning. Reports are sent home to parents and conferences are scheduled regularly to assess each student\u2019s progress. Staff will honor parental requests for additional conferences, meetings or reports at any time.\r\n
Classroom Assistance\/Volunteering<\/h2>\r\nHawthorne Elementary School understands the connection between family support and student success; therefore, we are committed to involving families in their child\u2019s education. Parents and guardians are encouraged to come to Hawthorne and assist teachers in their classrooms. This allows children to combine support from home with support at school, making for positive results.\r\n\r\nWe have very active parent volunteers.
