Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Oliver Wendell Holmes School follows the PBIS framework to nurture a calm, caring school climate where every student is respected and ready to learn.

Schools across the district and nation implement PBIS, a three-tiered framework that builds on positivity and consistency to help:

  • Teachers develop and share expectations with students and families to maintain a safe learning environment for all.
  • Children develop self-discipline and foster community through positive behavior in school.
  • Teachers and families share the responsibility and rewards of fostering good citizens.

Holmes School ‘Tiger Traits’

Classroom and hallway posters clearly state our PBIS expectations. Morning announcements also remind and reinforce these expectations, or Tiger Traits:

  • Be Responsible
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Safe
  • Be Kind.

From the principal’s office to our playground, staff teach and model these expectations and the entire Holmes School community joins in recognizing and rewarding PBIS success. During morning announcements and spirited all-school assemblies, staff recognize individual students, classrooms, and even bus routes for successfully demonstrating the Tiger Traits.

  • Monthly meetings of our PBIS attendance committee are helping to move our school closer to 95 percent attendance.
  • Quarterly attendance field trips help students and families stay focused on PBIS attendance goals. Dave and Buster’s in June 2024 was a powerful motivator and a great celebration!
  • Teachers and students work together to reinforce and reward positive behavior every month in every classroom.
  • Teachers use Class Dojo to track positive behavior points and set goals towards rewards and monthly incentives. Class Dojo can also be used to communicate with families.

When students feel safe, supported, and respected in school they perform better academically. The Wisconsin Response to Intervention Center acknowledged Holmes School with 2022-23 honors in three categories:

  • Silver award for behavior
  • Bronze award for reading
  • Bronze award for mathematics

Bringing PBIS from Holmes School to Home

Ask your child about their PBIS successes in school and consider what PBIS might look like in your home. Positivity and consistency are key. Recognizing your child’s positive contributions at home and in school can reinforce their academic development and overall well-being.
