Activities

Oliver Wendell Holmes School students can participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, and showcases focused on the arts, athletics, community service, and more.

Our teachers, coaches, and parent volunteers take extracurricular activities seriously because they help students explore career interests, develop new talents and skills, and make friends. Students who represent their school out in the community also get a taste of leadership experience and develop stronger school pride!

Holmes School extracurricular activities are listed below. Contact our parent coordinator or your student’s classroom teacher to learn more.

Athletics

The Holmes Tigers Athletics Program welcomes students in first through eighth grade as they train and compete in: Basketball, cheerleading, flag football, soccer, and volleyball.

Girl Scout Promise Program

An after-school experience offered during four- or eight- week sessions, girls will discover a strong sense of self, learn to seek out positive values, build and maintain healthy relationships, and grow as challenge seekers and problem solvers who take action to implement positive community change. These outcomes are proven to develop happier, healthier youth inside and outside the classroom.

Growing Minds

Growing Minds offers an array of customizable sessions that give youth the mental and emotional skills they need to flourish, inside and out. Students in grades one through four strengthen social-emotional skills like focus and attention, self awareness and self regulation, and relationship building. Yoga, mindfulness, and other healthy practices keep the learning fun and focused for children of all ages.

Nefertari African Dance Company

Led by Holmes School social worker Marilynn Douglas, Nefertari African Dance Company welcomes and trains dancers and drummers from K5 through eighth grade. After-school lessons lead to performances at cultural events and arts venues across the city. Nefertari dancers from our school have traveled as far as Madison, Wisconsin, and China for performances.

Student Leadership

Third through eighth graders run for student council and middle schoolers meet with our community school coordinator. Both groups advocate for ideas and opportunities that enhance the student experience. As a member of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership, Holmes School believes in shared school leadership among all stakeholders, including student representatives who join our Community School Leadership team.
