About

Scholars thrive as artists, citizens, and in community at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School, where every teacher is a leader and all children are scholars.

Our African American Immersion curriculum combines core subjects, African cultural traditions, restorative practices, and social and emotional lessons. Scholars learn about Kingian Values like peace and justice and read African tribal stories. They develop STEM skills in math and science classes and during research projects in our Library Media Center. Scholars demonstrate their creativity, literacy, and presentation skills at the Milwaukee Public Schools STEM Fair, spelling bee, and the city-wide Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speech contest. We are the Lions and our scholar-athletes compete in five sports.

Through the nationwide Turnaround Arts program, school leaders bring the arts to life in every subject. Scholars attend live theater and musical productions in Milwaukee and perform for families during events and celebrations.

Families can connect through our Parent Center and join our Family Leadership Organization. Leaders and family members are raising funds and drafting plans for a redeveloped schoolyard, coming in 2026. Through the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership, leaders, families, and community partners support scholars’ success in many ways. Resources and enrichment opportunities include wellness workshops, family events, cultural celebrations, and meetings of our Community School Leadership Team.

High-quality teaching, family and community engagement, and our arts-integrated African American Immersion curriculum prepare scholars for success in high school and beyond. Scholars leave Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School ready to contribute to their community as confident critical thinkers, problem solvers, and creators.
