Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Founded in 1908 at Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is in the business of empowering families, advocating for social justice, and uplifting communities. Their work creates opportunities for Milwaukee children and communities, and includes an annual MLK Day of Service, United Negro College Fund run/walk, youth leadership opportunities, and scholarship awards.
Epsilon Kappa Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members mentor our scholars. Scholars in grades five through eight can participate in AKA’s Youth Leadership Institute. They also sponsor the CHIPP program, which provides weekend and holiday meals to some Dr. King School families.
Upsilon Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members mentor our scholars and sponsor donation drives that provide school supplies and winter clothing to our families. They also sponsor our annual Family Fun Day in August.
Bader Philanthropies
Since its founding in 1992, Bader Philanthropies has committed more than $500 million in grants and program-related investments to improve the quality of life of people living in neighborhoods in Milwaukee, rural Wisconsin and abroad. Bader Philanthropies supports our annual civil rights education tour, which gives eighth-grade scholars an opportunity to retrace the steps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They also sponsor our Playworks program, field trips, and more.
Black Arts MKE
Increasing the availability and quality of African American arts and culture is the Black Arts MKE mission. Presenting culturally relevant programming to youth inspires their creativity. Providing MKE-based artists of color with employment, access, visibility, and development opportunities supports culturally relevant programming.
Children’s Wisconsin
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School’s partner organization through the School Community Partnership for Mental Health, therapists from Children’s Wisconsin spend two days per week at Dr. King School working with teachers, the school social worker, psychologist, counselor, and parent coordinator, to get to know students and families. As trusted members of our school community, therapists bring age-appropriate, evidence-based wellness workshops and therapies to students and families.
City Year Milwaukee
Members of the nonprofit’s AmeriCorps team work with our teachers during the school day, helping provide students with individualized attention. Serving as tutors, mentors, and role models, the AmeriCorps team at Dr. King School helps students develop social, emotional, and academic skills needed for success in school and in life. Reading Corps members provide Total Learning Classroom Support and small-group literacy tutoring to scholars in our K5 to third-grade classrooms.
Danceworks, Inc.
Founded in 1992, the mission of Danceworks, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is to enhance joy, health and creativity by engaging the community through dance. Fourth graders participate in Danceworks’ Mad Hot Rhythm, an innovative educational dance program that provides arts and physical education.
Florentine Opera
Founded in 1933 and now Milwaukee’s oldest professional performing arts organization, Florentine Opera’s theatrical and educational experiences explore the glory of the human voice and showcase stories and songs that have endured for centuries. The company even presents a fully costumed and staged children’s opera at schools, libraries, and other family-friendly locations. Florentine Opera stages an annual performance at Dr. King School.
Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin
The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network is a partnership between Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin supporting a shared mission of patient care, innovation, medical research and education. Eighth graders learn about healthcare careers through this partnership, culminating in an end-of-year field trip to Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin.
HeartLove Place
HeartLove Place is a nonprofit ministry, established in 1989, by dedicated individuals committed to serving Milwaukee families through love, kindness, respect, and care. Scholars help maintain the HeartLove Place community garden and participate in the neighborhood nonprofit’s Girls Who Walk and Talk program.
The Kennedy Center | Turnaround Arts
Turnaround Arts is a national program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts that transforms elementary and middle schools through the strategic use of the arts. Founded in 2011, the program brings high-quality, arts-integrated programs, professionals, and resources to schools in communities facing deep racial and economic inequities. The Herzfeld Foundation and Zilber Family Foundation support the Turnaround Arts program at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School.
Junior Achievement USA
Junior Achievement USA is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. Junior Achievement’s programs in work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy ignite the spark in young people to experience and realize the opportunities and realities of work and life in the 21st century. Scholars participate in Junior Achievement programming through Junior Achievement of Wisconsin.
Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership
Dr. King School is proud to be a member of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership (MCSP). Through MCSP, our scholars, families, teachers, staff, neighbors, and partners come together to form a strategy that best meets the needs of our scholars.
The MCSP is made up of three key partners with the core values of shared leadership, equity, and cultural relevance:

Milwaukee Rep
One of America’s largest professional theaters, Milwaukee Rep welcomes up to 300,000 people yearly to its performances. For over 65 years, Milwaukee Rep has gained a national reputation as an incubator of new work, agent of community change, and forward-thinking provider of arts education programs. The Milwaukee Rep brings its Reading Residencies curriculum to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School. Middle school scholars work on reading comprehension, literacy, and social and emotional skills through the lens of a Milwaukee Rep production. The Reading Residency classroom experience can include text analysis, read alouds, and performances. Most scholars will attend at least one Milwaukee Rep performance.
Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA)
Members of the MTEA are the educators who work directly with the students who attend Milwaukee’s public schools. Collectively they advocate for quality public education in Milwaukee. As advocates for educators, they are advocates for all children. They are here to lead the dialogue, to challenge, to support and work for change—ensuring a better future for members and the students and families they serve. The MTEA is a lead partner of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership.
Playworks Wisconsin
Playworks Wisconsin has given kids foundational skills for success on the playground, in the classroom, and in the community. Playworks Wisconsin is the leading organization that leverages play to promote healthy behaviors and increase social and emotional learning, at recess and throughout the school day.
Pretty Girls Are Educated
Founded in 2017, Pretty Girls Are Educated (PGAE) mentors girls and young women ages 6 to 18, providing scholarships, educational resources, and social and emotional support. Summer camps and workshops teach core life skills, leadership development, and women’s empowerment. PGAE programming emphasizes community engagement and volunteering.
Reflo
Annually, Reflo works with partners including Milwaukee Public Schools, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, the City of Milwaukee, the Fund for Lake Michigan, Community Design Solutions and others to support five Milwaukee-area schools in an intensive, collaborative process to design and then redevelop greener, healthier schoolyards. Designs go beyond removing pavement to maximize benefits for communities, the environment, and local economy.
Reflo is partnering with the Dr. King School Green Team to redevelop our schoolyard. The design includes native plantings, gardens, a new synthetic turf field, three outdoor classrooms, and other features that will enhance the student experience and school sustainability efforts.
School Community Partnership for Mental Health
Since 2009, the School Community Partnership for Mental Health (SCPMH) has provided intensive, on-site mental wellness programs and mental health services to students and families in Milwaukee Public Schools. The partnership began in just four schools and has expanded to nearly 40 schools, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School.
TRUE Skool
Founded in 2004, TRUE Skool’s mission is to engage, empower, and educate youth, families, and communities through transformative arts and hip-hop culture. TRUE Skool artist educators support our arts-integrated programming and created school murals that celebrate African and African American culture and histories.
United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County
An independently-governed 501(c)3 nonprofit organization connected to a network of more than 1,400 local United Ways through United Way Worldwide, the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County focuses its work on local solutions for local problems. The United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County is a lead partner of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership.
The United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County brings additional programs to our school, including Little Netta Gifts of Love, Mary Lou’s Closet, and My Very Own Library.
Urban Ecology Center
The vision of the Urban Ecology Center is to inspire generations to build environmental curiosity, understanding, and respect, restoring hope and healing our urban natural world, neighborhood by neighborhood. Scholars engage in field-research experiences at the Urban Ecology Center.
WestCare Wisconsin
WestCare has nearly a half-century of experience offering critical programs and services to children and families across the nation. The WestCare continuum of behavioral health and human services helps middle-school scholars strengthen family bonds, grow as young adults, and nurture their mental health. WestCare Wisconsin is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School’s partner organization through the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership.
