Principal’s Message

Greetings and Salutations to all!

Anesia HayesI would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome you to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School. My name is Anesia Hayes, and I am the proud instructional leader of this historic African American Immersion and community school in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood. Here, every child is a scholar and every adult in our community—classroom teachers, caregivers, custodians—are leaders. Our motto: “Restoring Hope in the Dream!”

As the mother of three beautiful children who attended Milwaukee Public Schools and a wife of more than 30 years, I am honored to be part of this wonderful learning community. I am a product of MPS, having attended Clement Avenue Elementary School, Samuel Morse Middle School for the Gifted and Talented, and Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School (now Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School), where I was a proud Trojan.

After high school, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I earned a bachelor’s degree in public policy and administration and a minor in management. I later received my master’s degree in administrative leadership from Cardinal Stritch University.

Since 1995, I have been a dedicated MPS leader. This journey has taken me from paraprofessional to substitute teacher, middle school teacher to assistant principal. I have been the instructional leader at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School since 2018.

The best part of my job? Supporting scholars’ personal and academic progress and celebrating how much they have grown by the end of every school year. Elevating young kings and queens unites us as leaders at Dr. King School. We maintain an open-door policy because we know family involvement makes our school stronger.

I am thrilled to continue serving this community and encourage you to join me. Parents of current scholars, please follow our Dr. King Facebook page and sign up for Campus Parent Portal so that you can monitor your scholar’s attendance, work assignments, and grades. Check out the MPS School Calendar for important dates that you should be aware of.

By working together to foster a culture of independent learning, achievement, and social and emotional well-being for all scholars, we can ensure Dr. King School continues to “Restore Hope in the Dream.” Inspired by ancestors and driven to help all scholars succeed, everyone at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School knows our best days lie ahead.

Best Regards,

Anesia Hayes, instructional leader
