Activities

Extracurricular activities at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School allow scholars to express creativity, make new friends, and continue their education beyond the school day.

Opportunities like team sports and youth council also help scholars demonstrate leadership skills and explore new talents. These activities reinforce values such as responsibility, respect, and hard work.

Parents and caregivers, please join us in encouraging your scholar’s participation. Ask our parent coordinator or another school leader for sign-up and schedule information.

Brother II Sister

A mentoring and leadership group for fifth through eighth graders, Brother II Sister after-school meetings are twice-weekly opportunities for scholars to receive homework help, tutoring support, and learn leadership skills. Mentors are MPS alumni.

Community School Youth Council

The student voice is strong on our Community School Youth Council. Scholars who join the council meet with our community school coordinator and school psychologist twice per month. Together, we share priorities and make plans to boost Lion pride and enhance the learning experience for all scholars as a member school of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership.

Girls Who Walk and Talk

Girls in grades six through eight join mentors from nearby nonprofit HeartLove Place for healthy eating, nurturing conversation, and lunchtime walks.

Youth Leadership Institute

Led by scholars for scholars ages 11-13, this interactive leadership development group meets after school.

Athletics

The Dr. King School Lions compete in four sports throughout the school year. Scholar-athletes in grades one through eight can join our school’s co-ed basketball, cheerleading, flag football, or soccer teams. Middle school basketball players will join a boys’ or girls’ team. Athletes of all skill levels can participate.
