Bilingual Program

Learning and growing in two languages — Spanish and English — enriches children’s lives today and prepares them to succeed tomorrow.

At Lincoln Avenue School, teaching children to read, write, speak, and listen in Spanish and English is our expertise and our legacy.

We made history in 1969, becoming one of Milwaukee’s first bilingual program schools. Today, our bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers proudly continue this tradition. Research shows that students who are bilingual and biliterate develop strong problem-solving skills and working memory, flexible thinking abilities, and an appreciation for other cultures. These are benefits that will last a lifetime.

Bilingual Program Students

Lincoln Avenue offers a one-way bilingual dual language program. Students from K4 to fifth grade proudly use their language knowledge and skills to learn how to read, write, speak, and listen in Spanish and English.

  • Our students develop English-language skills and vocabulary while learning literacy, math, science, social studies, and other subjects.
  • For kindergarten students, ninety percent of the school day is taught in Spanish. By fourth grade, fifty percent of the school day is taught in Spanish and the other half in English.

Bilingual Program Families

Families from diverse Spanish-language backgrounds choose Lincoln Avenue School for many reasons. Educators bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the classroom: bilingual education, special education, curriculum and instruction, child development, and other qualifications. Students in our bilingual and monolingual programs learn and socialize together during recess, lunch, and after school.

Our school embraces your family’s heritage and history:

  • Our Parent Coordinator can provide support and resources to Spanish- and English-speaking families.
  • MPS offers English-language literacy classes for families, in addition to financial wellness, health and wellness, and homebuying workshops in Spanish.
  • Celebrations, community events, after-school programs, and classroom libraries showcase stories and cultures from around the world.

Bilingual Multicultural Pathway

MPS offers bilingual programs in 21 schools so students can learn in both languages. The bilingual, biliterate brain continues to develop during adolescence so it’s important to keep your child enrolled in a bilingual program through high school.
