This after-school program works to enhance children&#8217;s writing and public speaking skills, increase youth community engagement, as well as improve physical fitness and overall health through soccer practices and games.<\/p>\n<p>As a\u00a0youth-development\u00a0program, 16 boys and 16 girls from each SCORES school, including Lincoln Avenue School, participate in 90 minutes of after-school programming five days per week for 20 weeks throughout the school year: two writing workshops and three soccer sessions, each led by specially trained teachers who we refer to as soccer and writing &#8220;coaches.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Athletics<\/h2>\n<p>Coached by parent and community volunteers, the Lincoln Avenue Eagles welcome athletes of all abilities, in grades one through six, to represent our school in basketball, cheerleading, and soccer.<\/p>\n<h2>Scouting America (SA)<\/h2>\n<p>MPS students participating in SA, formerly Boy Scouts of America, belong to the youth development organization\u2019s Three Harbors Council, which delivers Scouting programs to 5,000 youth in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties. Locally and nationally, the SA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.<\/p>\n<h2>Cantos de las Am\u00e9ricas<\/h2>\n<p>This annual celebration honors the varied cultures that are represented by the students of Milwaukee Public Schools. Historically, the event has featured students performing songs and dances from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and the Hmong, Laotian, and Native American cultures.<\/p>\n<h2>Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast<\/h2>\n<p>Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast provides friendship, adventure, give back opportunities, leadership, new skills, and fun for Girl Scouts in grades K5-12, bringing session-based after-school programming to Lincoln Avenue School.<\/p>\n<h2>Girls on the Run<\/h2>\n<p>Girls on the Run has fun, evidence-based programs that inspire all girls to build their confidence, kindness, and decision making skills. Dynamic lessons instill valuable life skills including the important connection between physical and emotional health.<\/p>\n<h2>Green Team<\/h2>\n<p>Founded in 2022, the Lincoln Avenue School Green Team brings teachers, students, and families together to help design and raise funds for our redeveloped schoolyard. We join lead partner Reflo to break ground on the project in summer 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>KK River Explorers<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mpsschoolsites.wpenginepowered.com\/lincoln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2017\/06\/KK-River-Explorers-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1119 alignright size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mps.school\/lincoln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2017\/06\/KK-River-Explorers-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mps.school\/lincoln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2017\/06\/KK-River-Explorers-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mps.school\/lincoln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2017\/06\/KK-River-Explorers.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Sixteenth Street Community Health Center\u2019s KK River Explorers after-school program is a completely free and bilingual program for third through fifth graders at Lincoln Avenue and Zablocki schools. We spend time outside and follow a curriculum that meets Wisconsin standards for environmental literacy and sustainability. KK River Explorers runs for 11 weeks in both the spring and fall, with nature-based activities on-site at school and on field trips to different green and blue spaces around Milwaukee. We also partner with other local nonprofits, such as Milwaukee Riverkeeper, for on-site lessons.<\/p>\n<h2>Movement Matters<\/h2>\n<p>Third through fifth-grade students learn cultural dances from around the world. Dance class is low pressure, high energy, and lots of fun in this weekly, one-hour club.<\/p>\n<h2>NBA Math Hoops<\/h2>\n<p>With an appreciation and understanding of math, students will become passionate, self-directed learners, and they will have the capacity to control their personal and educational narratives. They will have a better chance of graduating from high school, attending college, and ultimately pursuing meaningful careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). NBA Math Hoops creates math champions, one game at a time.<\/p>\n<h2>Torch<\/h2>\n<p>Torch Clubs are chartered, small-group character and leadership clubs for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. Torch Club members elect officers and work together to implement projects in the four focus areas: service to club and community; education; health and fitness; and social recreation. At Lincoln Avenue School, Torch Club is running a peanut-butter-and-jelly drive during the 2023-24 school year.<\/p>\n<h2>Growing Minds<\/h2>\n<p>Growing Minds offers an array of customizable sessions that give youth the mental and emotional skills they need to flourish, inside and out. Students in grades one through four strengthen social-emotional skills like focus and attention, self-awareness and self-regulation, and relationship building. Our students lead by faculty from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcmusic.org\/connections\/#1497382901925-7a010b57-8df0\">Wisconsin Conservatory of Music<\/a> use 5-gallon buckets to learn general music concepts and discover African, Cuban, Haitian and various cultural traditions.\r\n<h2>Cheerleading<\/h2>\r\n<img class=\"alignright wp-image-1115 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/mpsschoolsites.wpenginepowered.com\/lincoln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2017\/06\/Cheerleaders-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Students in 2nd - 5th grade are able to participate in our cheerleading program. Students who participate learn cheers, dance routines, and perform in various school events, as well as, represent the school at district events around the city.\r\n<h2>Dance<\/h2>\r\nStudents can participate in weekly dance instruction in salsa, African dance, and hip hop. KK River Explorers meet during the Spring semester at the school and Pulaski Park.\r\n<h2>Girl Scouts<\/h2>\r\nIn\u00a0<b>Girl Scouts<\/b>, girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through a myriad of enriching experiences, such as extraordinary field trips, sports skill-building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships, girls grow courageous and strong. Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.\u00a0Our troop is part of the\u00a0<b>Girl Scouts of Wisconsin \u2013 Southeast.<\/b>\r\n<h2>Boy Scouts<\/h2>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scouting.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boy Scouts of America<\/a> is one of the nation\u2019s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. For over a century, the BSA has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun.
