Academics

Lincoln’s academic and arts programs encourage students to think creatively, develop diverse skills, and acquire knowledge that prepares them for high school and life.

Through clear, consistent expectations and communication, Lincoln Center of the Arts is a place where students and staff feel respected and ready to do their best work. Depending on the day and the student, work might be designing a science experiment or choreographing a dance piece. Students embrace routine and responsibility as they travel between classrooms and studios during their day.

Common Core State Standards

The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.

Ambitious Instruction Plan

The Milwaukee Public Schools Ambitious Instruction Plan recognizes and celebrates that our students come from many cultures and backgrounds. This plan focuses on high-quality, culturally appropriate teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that every student develops reading, writing, and math skills in ways that are meaningful to their individual life and experiences. Our staff works together to understand each learner, find appropriate ways to assess and improve their progress, and make sure that students can apply what they have learned in productive ways in school and in their community.

Math

Sixth graders begin by reviewing what they already know: identify a mathematical problem or question that can be translated to an equation, solve the equation, check the work, and provide the answer. This foundation helps students learn advanced mathematical processes and develop an ability to reason and draw conclusions. Teachers may integrate technology into lessons, so students get extra math practice using online learning programs and discussing their work in small groups. Eighth graders learn and apply advanced mathematical strategies and vocabulary to prepare for high school.

Science

Our theme-based curriculum teaches students about core scientific concepts and principles and related vocabulary and processes. Educators provide instruction and guidance as students apply scientific methods, gather information, and design and conduct experiments. Final steps include recording and analyzing data and sharing research findings with classmates.

Reading and English Language Arts

Every reading assignment is an opportunity to explore new themes and cultures, create meaning, and gather data. Students become critical readers and thinkers as they respond to a variety of texts and the diverse voices, information, and perspectives in each. They debate, evaluate, and analyze news sources and other texts to determine accuracy and correctness.

Students take notes, listen, and ask questions in classrooms, and they learn about safe, effective Internet use in our Library Media Center. Research projects challenge students to answer questions and find supporting evidence in our print and digital collections. Essay assignments allow them to organize their ideas, summarize key facts, and cite sources. By defending their completed work in group presentations and essays, students become better listeners and speak and write with greater confidence.

Social Studies

Our social studies curriculum focuses on ancient and medieval civilizations before moving into the modern world. Sixth and seventh graders study diverse cultures and histories and make connections to their own lives and experiences.

Eighth graders study key people, places, and events that shaped the United States and may visit local historical sites and museums. Researching and reflecting on what they learn in classrooms and in the field helps students understand their place and purpose in our interconnected world.

Music

Lincoln students develop a deep appreciation and understanding of music. Sixth graders study music technology and learn to keep the beat in drumline practice and dance class. Musicians in all grades may participate in Lincoln’s award-winning band and orchestral ensembles. Family and community fill seats and students take the stage during Lincoln Center of the Arts winter and spring showcases and other special events.

Physical Education and Health

Physical education teachers present activities, strategies, and knowledge to help students lead healthy lives and make responsible decisions. Students assess and measure their physical activity to better understand how fitness can help us live longer. Team activities promote cooperation, communication, and a strong mind-body connection.

Health education focuses on community health, strategies, and skills students can use throughout their lifetime. Lessons and discussion topics include self-respect, building healthy relationships, and setting and achieving goals.

Special Education

MPS serves all children with disabilities, including cognitive, physical, emotional, learning, hearing, vision, and speech disabilities. Our special education teachers, regular education teachers, school social worker, school psychologist, and administration work together to meet students’ needs.

If you think your child has special education needs, ask your child’s teacher or principal for an evaluation. For general questions about special education or specialized services, please call (414) 874-8493, or learn more about Specialized Services.
