[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]Research shows that when family members are involved in their child\u2019s school\u2014as decision-makers, volunteers, and advocates\u2014student performance and school culture are stronger.<\/p>\n<p>We implement Milwaukee Public Schools Family &amp; Community Engagement framework so families and staff can collaborate to support individual student achievement and overall school progress.<\/p>\n<h2>Parent and Family Engagement Opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Parent Coordinator Briana Figueroa runs our Parent Center and helps coordinate our School Engagement Council. The Parent Center is located in our Library Media Center and is open during the school day.<\/p>\n<h3>School Engagement Council (SEC)<\/h3>\n<p>Join our SEC to learn about Lowell School attendance, budgetary, and academic matters. Families and staff meet monthly to review our school\u2019s progress. SEC members make decisions, and revise plans to support student success.\u00a0Virtual SEC meetings are held the last Wednesday of each month unless otherwise noted.<\/p>\n<h3>District Advisory Council (DAC)<\/h3>\n<p>Learn about and advise on district programs and strategies related to our Title One School-wide Program during monthly meetings of the Milwaukee Public Schools DAC. Each school sends two delegates to meetings; alternates may attend as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Family Events<\/h2>\n<p>Get to know Lowell families during annual literacy night and math night events, our winter program, and spring open house\/PYP exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Monthly family nights at Cousins Subs of Milwaukee, located at Sixth Street and Layton Avenue, are a school tradition and fundraiser. The restaurant donates a portion of the evening\u2019s proceeds to Lowell School.<\/p>\n<h2>Family and Staff Communication<\/h2>\n<p>Students feel extra motivated when teachers and parents work together to reinforce high expectations and positive learning strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Here are tips for building a strong parent-teacher relationship and staying up to date on school news and family events.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collect school and teacher contact information at the beginning of the year. Gather this information from teachers, during open-house events, or visit our <a href=\"..\/about\/staff-directory\/\">staff directory<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Sign up for <a href=\"campus-parent-portal\/\">Campus Parent Portal<\/a> to receive real-time updates on your child\u2019s progress in school.<\/li>\n<li>Join SchoolMessenger, a digital communication app we use to communicate with families.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/visitor.r20.constantcontact.com\/manage\/optin?v=001teuQlcKoWkjOVbSTzFnmNb62cwIos7N4mNzUq3WVFLUA0M-copZ0Fb_VxJDlK8k4arGhrvUE78oqeQQ0UrWBgXH9a8Xqok7mN9_z-BxTByM%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up for the MPS Family Friday Newsletter<\/a> for district-wide news and updates.<\/li>\n<li>Keep an eye out for our school newsletter.<\/li>\n<li>Attend parent-teacher conferences. If conference days and times don\u2019t work for you, ask your child\u2019s teacher if you can schedule a virtual appointment or phone call.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Supporting Your Child During the School Day<\/h2>\n<p>Family involvement leads to better grades, better attendance, improved test scores, higher self-esteem, and better behavior for children. Supporting your child\u2019s success includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making sure your child arrives at school on time every day. School starts at 7:25 a.m.<\/li>\n<li>Calling the attendance line when your child is absent, (414) 304-6600.\u00a0We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with any who are absent. We must also record absences correctly.<\/li>\n<li>Observing the 2:10 p.m. dismissal time.\u00a0If your student does not use school transportation or attend Camp Lowell, they must be picked up at 2:10 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Becoming a school volunteer by completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/mpsmke.com\/mpsvolapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MPS volunteer application<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Supporting Your Child\u2019s Education at Home<\/h2>\n<p>Supporting your child\u2019s learning at home can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helping your child with homework. At home, have a quiet time and place for homework.<\/li>\n<li>Exploring learning programs and games together. Login through <a href=\"https:\/\/clever.com\/in\/milwaukee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clever<\/a> to find programs like My Path, Discovery Education, and Flocabulary.<\/li>\n<li>Sending your child to school with a bookbag every day and check the bookbag at night. Lots of important paperwork travels from school to home and back in their bookbag.<\/li>\n<li>If your child brings a cold lunch, make sure that it is nutritious.<\/li>\n<li>Reading with or having your child read every day.<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging your child to keep a writing journal.<\/li>\n<li>Providing your child with comments of encouragement regularly.<\/li>\n<li>Making sure your child gets the proper amount of sleep every night.<\/li>\n<li>Connecting. We understand that there are often obstacles that affect families. If you would like to talk to a\u202fschool counselor, psychologist, social worker, or parent coordinator, please reach out. Please make sure that your child(ren) are at school, on time, every day. The school day starts at 7:25 a.m. and ends at 2:10 p.m. If your child(ren) will be absent, please make sure to let the office know by calling (414) 304-6600. Thank you for supporting your child(ren)\u2019s attendance at school!\r\n<h2>Assist Your Child with Homework<\/h2>\r\nYour child\u2019s teacher will communicate with you about the type of homework that is appropriate for your child. Be sure to provide a quiet time and place for homework.\r\n<h2>Help Your Child Improve Their Scores<\/h2>\r\nPrograms used in the classroom can be utilized by your child at home to help them improve academically. Have your student login through <a href=\"https:\/\/clever.com\/in\/milwaukee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clever<\/a> to find all programs they can access including Smarty Ants, My Path, Discovery Education, Flocabulary, etc.\r\n<h2>Discuss Your Child\u2019s Progress with Their Teachers<\/h2>\r\nAttend parent\/teacher conferences, or arrange for a special conference with your child\u2019s teacher. If time does not permit, a phone call or a brief note is appreciated.\r\n\r\nFamilies play a vital role in education. Parents are encouraged to work with teachers to decide on an appropriate time to visit their child\u2019s classroom, discuss student progress and share ways to increase learning. Reports are sent home to parents and conferences are scheduled regularly to assess each student\u2019s progress. Staff will honor parental requests for additional conferences, meetings or reports at any time.\r\n<h2>Classroom Assistance\/Volunteering<\/h2>\r\nLowell International Elementary School understands the connection between family support and student success; therefore, we are committed to involving families in their child\u2019s education. Parents and guardians are encouraged to come to Lowell and assist teachers in their classrooms. This allows children to combine support from home with support at school, making for positive results.\r\n\r\nWe have very active parent volunteers. We are always looking for more caring, motivated individuals to work with our students.
