Through the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership, JMAC and our community partners offer services and programs that encourage family involvement and family/student well-being, from monthly meetings of our Family Leadership Organization (FLO) and Community School Leadership Team (CSLT) to theme nights that offer an inside look at the college application process, graduation preparation, and more.
- Parent coordinator Brandyce Tolbert-Rivas (tolberbr@milwaukee.k12.wi.us) can answer questions about family resources, school events, the parent and family resource center, FLO, CSLT, District Advisory Council, and more.
- The JMAC parent and family resource center is open on school days by appointment.
Family Engagement and Events
JMAC events are a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow Knights families and get to know the school better. Our music program is growing, and you might even be treated to a performance by our choir and piano students.
Popular family events include:
- Black History Program
- Family Barbeque
- Honor Roll Dinner
- Open House
- Winter Fest
Community School Leadership Team (CSLT)
Families join staff, students, community partners, and community members to identify needs and determine strategies to best ensure student and school success during monthly CSLT meetings, held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. the third Wednesday of every month unless otherwise noted.
District Advisory Council (DAC)
Families can stay informed on and share ideas about the district’s Title I programs and priorities during monthly council meetings. Each school sends two delegates to meetings; alternates may attend, as well.
Family Leadership Organization (FLO)
Families participate in discussions and decisions to help support our students during FLO meetings, held from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the third Thursday of every month unless otherwise noted.
Supporting Students at Home
Here are some tips you can follow at home to help ensure your child’s success at JMAC.
- Make attendance a priority. There is an undeniable link between a student’s attendance and their overall success. Call the school attendance line when your child will be absent: (414) 393-6100. We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with any who are absent. We must also record absences correctly.
- Make sure your child arrives at school on time every day. 8:00 a.m.
- Make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for school. Please let us know if your student needs a coat or other outerwear.
- Communicate with us. By communicating with the school, you are able to keep up with your child. It is recommended that parents attend parent-teacher conferences and reach out any time there are concerns or changes that may affect students.
- Set realistic expectations. It is always important to set standards to ensure that our children are working towards attaining a goal. Make sure that these standards are realistic and attainable. By setting expectations, we can hold our students accountable for their education.
- Keep your child healthy. Make sure your child is getting enough rest and eating right. It is important that our students be prepared to take on their day. By caring for your child’s physical, emotional, and mental health, you are ensuring that your child is ready to succeed in school.
- Ask for help. We understand that there are often obstacles that affect families. We are here to help. If you would like to talk to a school counselor, psychologist, or social worker, please reach out. Our goal is to collaborate with parents and families to build a strong support network for our students.
Learning at Home
At home, your child can easily access the same online programs they use in class. Have your student log in through Clever to find learning programs like Flocabulary, Xello, Book Creator, Proximity, and many others.
Students have 24/7 access to Google Classroom, our teachers’ preferred interactive learning platform.
Communicating With Your Child’s Teacher
Stay in touch with your child’s teacher and you’ll be up to date on your child’s academic goals and accomplishments. Students feel extra motivated when they see teachers and parents working as a team to reinforce high expectations and positive learning strategies. Here are some tips for building a strong parent-teacher relationship to support your child.
- Collect current school and teacher contact information at the beginning of each school year. You can gather this information from teacher handouts, during open-house events or visit our staff directory.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences. Students are proud to “show off” their school and feel supported when teachers and caregivers make time to meet at a conference or school event.
- If a scheduled conference time does not work for you, contact the teacher to choose a different time. Or schedule a virtual appointment or phone call with the teacher. Ask if your child should attend.
