Partnerships

Alexander Mitchell Integrated Arts School is grateful to our community partners for their ongoing gifts of time, services, resources, creativity, and collaboration.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee

With safe places to learn and play, positive role models, and educational programming, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee provides after-school enrichment at Mitchell School in partnership with the school and Milwaukee Recreation. The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center at Mitchell School provides K4 through eighth-grade students with a healthy snack or light dinner and supervised, structured academic enrichment opportunities that reinforce what students learn during the school day.

City Year Milwaukee

A key participant within the Milwaukee Partnership Schools program supporting Alexander Mitchell School and three other MPS sites, City Year Milwaukee assigns 15 AmeriCorps members to serve as student success coaches on a full-time basis. Coaches partner with teachers to help meet student needs, providing students with individualized attention and serving as tutors, mentors, and role models who help students develop social, emotional, and academic skills needed for success in school and in life.

Junior Achievement USA

Junior Achievement USA is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. Mitchell students experience JA programming through Junior Achievement Wisconsin.

Marquette University

Marquette is a Catholic, Jesuit university with more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students in 11 nationally and internationally recognized colleges and schools. Fourth through eighth graders participate in peer mediation programming through Marquette University Peace Works.

Milwaukee Art Museum

The Milwaukee Art Museum collects and preserves art, presenting it to the community as a vital source of inspiration and education. From its roots in Milwaukee’s first art gallery in 1888, the Museum has grown today to be an icon for Milwaukee and a resource for the entire state. Central to the Museum’s mission is its role as a premier educational resource, with educational programs that are among the largest in the nation, involving classes, tours, and a full calendar of events for all ages. Third through fifth graders participate in the Milwaukee Art Museum Junior Docent School program.

Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership

Mitchell School is proud to be a member of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership (MCSP). Through MCSP, our students, families, teachers, staff, neighbors, and partners come together to form a strategy that best meets the needs of our students.

The MCSP is made up of three key partners with the core values of shared leadership, equity, and cultural relevance:

  • Milwaukee Public Schools
  • Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association
  • United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County

Milwaukee Partnership Schools

In 2015, Milwaukee Public Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, and City Year Milwaukee formed an innovative partnership to improve school culture and increase student academic achievement.

A strong school culture begins when students arrive at school on time and excited to learn. Partners work with the social and emotional learning teacher to support a school community that is welcoming and positive. Students learn to develop healthy relationship-building, problem-solving, and mindfulness skills.

Each partner also offers academic support. Academic interventionists are teachers who can coordinate additional learning support that partners and teachers provide to students.

  • One-on-one early literacy tutoring to students from K5 through grade three – SPARK Literacy
  • Small group tutoring in literacy and math to students from third through eighth grade – City Year Milwaukee
  • Homework help and academic enrichment activities that continue into after-school programming – Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee

All students access game-based, student-paced math instruction using ST Math during and after school.

Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association

Members of the MTEA are the educators who work directly with the students who attend Milwaukee’s public schools. Collectively they advocate for quality public education in Milwaukee. As advocates for educators, they are advocates for all children. They are here to lead the dialogue, to challenge, to support and work for change — ensuring a better future for their members and the students and families they serve.

Muskego Way Forward

Established in 2014 with roots dating back to 1921, Muskego Way Forward strengthens our historic southside-Milwaukee neighborhood by creating new connections and opportunities, and building on the leadership of local citizens. This work is resident driven, staffed, and supported by Milwaukee Christian Center. Muskego Way Forward is active within Mitchell School’s Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership network as its members participate in school events and sit on our Community School Leadership Team (CSLT).

Reflo

Annually, Reflo works with partners including Milwaukee Public Schools, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, the City of Milwaukee, the Fund for Lake Michigan, Community Design Solutions and others to support Milwaukee-area schools in an intensive, collaborative process to design and then redevelop greener, healthier schoolyards. Mitchell School’s redeveloped schoolyard opened in 2023.

Each redevelopment project is tailored to the specific needs and enthusiasm of the school’s community but often involves replacing seas of asphalt with green infrastructure including bioswales, rain gardens, and trees as well as outdoor classrooms, improved recreational facilities and arts opportunities. Designs go beyond removing pavement to maximize benefits for communities, the environment, and local economy.

Safe & Sound

With a mission to unite residents, youth, law enforcement, and community resources to build safe and empowered neighborhoods, the nonprofit organization Safe & Sound is active within Mitchell School’s Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership network. Safe & Sound community organizers attend school events, sit on our Community School Leadership Team (CSLT), and connect school families and neighbors through campaigns that promote neighborhood safety, beauty, and camaraderie.

SPARK Literacy

For students from K5 through third grade, SPARK offers one-on-one tutoring sessions and individual lessons to help students read at/above grade level by the end of third grade. SPARK programming takes place in the classroom, after school, and even in the home. Family engagement is a priority because it leads to better academic outcomes.

United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County

An independently-governed 501(c)3 nonprofit organization connected to a network of more than 1,400 local United Ways through United Way Worldwide, the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County focuses its work on local solutions for local problems. The United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County is a lead partner of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership.

Urban Ecology Center

At the Urban Ecology Center’s three locations the wonders of the outdoors bring curious people together. Their programs bring Milwaukee’s children and families into nature and as a result, urban parks are safer to visit, kids are acquiring the science skills they need to succeed, and adults keep on learning about how the changing world around us works. The Urban Ecology Center provides year-round educational programs for kids, families and adults of all ages, including field experiences for Mitchell School Students.

Wisconsin Conservatory of Music

The Wisconsin Conservatory is more than a community music school; it guides and inspires children and adults alike to find their voice, discover their desired instrument, and develop their music-making capabilities, whether you are just beginning or a seasoned professional. The conservatory’s performer-educators bring weekly curriculum-based music instruction to Mitchell School.
