When caregivers are partners in their child’s learning journey and contribute to Mitchell School as committee members, volunteers, and advocates, our school also performs better.
Family Resources and Events
Mitchell School has a dedicated parent coordinator on staff to answer questions about parent engagement, family events, and school and community resources. Yeimina Rivera is our parent coordinator and she runs our Parent Resource Center, open during school hours. Please stop in the main office to sign in and ask for directions.
Visit the Parent Resource Center to complete a volunteer application, request translation or interpretation support, and review our Parent Resource Binder. Ask about free classes for parents and caregivers: art, English as a Second Language, and technology courses are offered throughout the year. Contact the Parent Resource Center at (414) 902-8135.
Meet our teachers and staff and connect with other Mitchell families during school events. Expect a crowd, as anywhere from 200 to 300 members of our school community attend to support all students and share the Mitchell Eagles pride.
Community School Leadership Team (CSLT)
As a Community School, we work with staff, students, families, community partners and neighbors to identify needs and determine strategies to best ensure student and school success. Family members and community partners are invited to monthly CSLT breakfast meetings, held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the third Thursday of every month.
Family Leadership Organization (FLO)
As a Community School, Mitchell School asks families to have a voice in discussions and decision making to support our students. All family members are invited to monthly FLO breakfast meetings, held from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., the third Thursday of every month.
Family Nights
Every month we host a family night with support from our partners at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, City Year Milwaukee, and SPARK Literacy. Whether it’s our spring art show, literacy night, or math night, we promise there will be food, fun, and family activities for all ages.
Open House
Every September, families, community partners, and special guests join us for tours, live music, food, and bilingual and multicultural connection during one of Milwaukee Public School’s biggest open-house events.
Talent Show
This annual celebration of our school’s diverse cultures and talented students is a beloved, well-attended springtime tradition.
Athletics
Our school’s athletics program brings families together to cheer on Mitchell School’s flag football, soccer, track (and other) teams during weekend games. Family members are our biggest cheerleaders and also our volunteer coaches.
Helping with Homework
At home, be sure to provide a quiet time and place for your child to do homework. At home, your child also has access to the same online programs they use in class. Have your student log in through Clever to find learning programs like Smarty Ants, Discovery Education, Flocabulary, and others.
Children get additional homework help in our community learning center. We are home to one of the district’s first community learning centers, a popular and convenient after-school destination for many Mitchell students. Learn more about the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center at Mitchell School.
Communicating with Your Child’s Teacher
Stay in touch with your child’s teacher and stay up to date on their academic goals and accomplishments. Students feel extra motivated when they see teachers and parents working as a team to reinforce high expectations and positive learning strategies.
Teachers send progress reports to parents and guardians and hold conferences, and teachers and staff are ready to help Mitchell School families with extra meetings or reports. Here are some tips for building a strong parent-teacher relationship to support your child.
- Collect current school and teacher contact information at the beginning of each school year. You can gather this information from teacher handouts, during open-house events, or visit our staff directory.
- Join Class Dojo, a digital communication app that Mitchell School teachers and coaches use to easily, quickly communicate with families. Your child’s teacher will provide login information at the beginning of the school year or sports season.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences. Students are proud to “show off” their school and feel supported when teachers and caregivers make time to meet at a conference or school event.
- If a scheduled conference time does not work for you, contact the teacher to choose a different time. Or schedule a virtual appointment or phone call with the teacher. Ask if your child should attend.
- Send your child to school with a bookbag every day and check the bookbag when they come home at night. Lots of important paperwork travels from school to your home and back again in your child’s bookbag: assignments, permission slips, classroom updates, and school calendars.
Supporting Your Child’s Education at Home
Family involvement leads to better grades, better attendance, improved test scores, higher self-esteem, and better behavior for children. Supporting your child’s success at Mitchell School includes practices and priorities like:
- Make sure your child arrives at school on time every day (7:25 a.m.).
- Call the attendance line when your child will be absent, at (414) 902-8100. We must be sure every student has arrived safely and follow up with any who are absent. We must also record absences correctly.
- Ensure that your child gets at least nine hours of sleep every night.
- Dress your child appropriately for the weather. Please tell us if your student needs a coat or other outerwear.
- Check your child’s bookbag every day for homework or important messages.
- Help your child with homework. At home, have a quiet time and place for homework.
- Read with your child every day.
- Volunteer at school. Learn more about volunteering with MPS.
- Ask how you can join our field trips.
