Activities

Student activities at Milwaukee School of Languages (MSL) cover wide-ranging interests— environmental education to mental wellness—and provide skill-building and leadership opportunities.

Cultural activities, competitions, and inclusive programming strengthen our Hawks’ pride and make our school a welcoming place for all.

Asian Club

Asian Club welcomes all MSL students. Members share cultural traditions and cuisines from Asian communities represented within our student and family population.

Black Student Union

School-wide intellectual, social, and cultural enrichment are among the goals of the Black Student Union. To meet these goals, members promote academic achievement and intellectual pursuit, cultivate dynamic leadership, and strive to eliminate social barriers for all.

Book Club

Students who share an appreciation for the written word read and discuss world literature.

Chess Team

MSL students are master linguists and strategists. Students plan and execute their (chess) moves in after-school practices and compete in regional and state tournaments. Our Hawks often earn first- and second-place team trophies and individual awards.

Environmental Club

Raising awareness of environmental issues includes making art with recycled materials, community cleanups in the MSL neighborhood, and fundraising to landscape our school courtyard. Students interested in green infrastructure, the natural environment, and the health of our local ecosystem will find themselves at home in Environmental Club.

Esports

MSL gamers compete in the Rocket League, affiliated with the Electronic Gaming Foundation’s Youth Esports League (EGFY).

Fantasy Club

There are worlds to be explored and powers to be wielded when Fantasy Club meets. All students are welcome to join the action.

French Club and Tutoring

Two clubs, one language. Students who want to experience French culture and develop a deeper understanding of the language can join French Club. Students expanding their vocabulary and polishing their grammar for proficiency exams and assessments can receive after-school tutoring.

Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA)

GSA clubs promote and encourage inclusion, awareness, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ students and allies. Our GSA is led by students, supported by a school advisor, and is a safe space for all LGBTQ+ students and allies. GSAs are supported by the MPS Department of Gender & Identity Inclusion.

Hawks Help Homework Club

Bring your homework to Wednesday club meetings. Homework club meets until 5 p.m. Students will find a quiet space to focus on work, get extra help from teachers, or earn community service hours tutoring Hawks peers.

Honored Hawks Chapter of the National Honor Society

Students in grades ten through twelve are eligible for membership. Juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher (3.4 with one AP class, 3.3 with two AP classes) on a 4.0 scale will be invited to complete a Student Activity Information form. The SAI provides the Faculty Council with information regarding a candidate’s fulfillment of additional membership criteria: leadership, service, and character.

Hope Squad

This peer-to-peer suicide prevention program supports MSL students struggling with issues such as school, work, and relationships. Classmates nominate Hope Squad members. These students are known for demonstrating trustworthiness and strong communication skills. A team of MSL faculty advise, train, and support our Hope Squad. Squads across the U.S. and Canada reduce the risk of youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention.

Jazz Ensemble

Student musicians entertain during MSL cultural and community events and participate in Wisconsin School Music Association competitions.

Language Honor Societies

Honor societies recognize outstanding academic achievement and promote advanced studies in literature, civilizations, and these languages:

  • French – Société Honoraire de Français
  • German – Delta Epsilon Phi ΔΕΦ
  • Spanish – Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica

Eligible students must have completed three semesters of high school French, German, or Spanish with a 3.6 grade point average and an overall grade point average of 3.5/4.0.

Latinos Unidos

Celebrating Latin and Hispanic students and sharing their stories and traditions is part of the bilingual multicultural learning experience, and it’s the work of Latinos Unidos. Members bring their artistry and family histories to community celebrations like Día de los Muertos at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts. You can learn from their presentations and performances at events like MSL’s Festival of Nations. All students are welcome.

Musical

MSL’s robust theater community stages an annual musical that requires the skilled contributions of student cast and crew. Who knows what’s next from the musical crew after their outstanding spring 2025 production of Hairspray?

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

Middle school students who have 20 or more advanced scores on their first semester report card, good attendance, and no incident referrals can apply for membership. The faculty selection committee reviews applications and selects students who best demonstrate the following NJHS pillars: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. All other criteria listed for the National Honor Society apply to the NJHS.

Newspaper

Mondays after school, student writers, journalists, and photographers come together to plan MSL’s digital (and sometimes print) newspaper. Hawk’s Eye View is open to students in all grades.

Rock Climbing Club

MSL student-athletes race to the top during evening and weekend practices and competitions. While striving to beat their personal best, MSL athletes compete against climbers from other MPS and local schools.

Yearbook

Motivated and organized students meet weekly, photograph school events throughout the year, and learn layout and design skills to create official middle school and high school yearbooks for MSL.

YES Program

YES student-led chapters nationwide and at MSL inform and empower students. Through weekly meetings and leadership development opportunities with Voces de la Frontera, YES students amplify their voice within and beyond the MSL. They collaborate with parents, educators, and other community leaders to represent the interests of students, immigrants, and workers.
