French Immersion Program

Milwaukee School of Languages (MSL) French Immersion Program builds on students’ Milwaukee French Immersion School (MFIS) K-5 education.

High-quality teaching and a network of support services help students work toward true proficiency in a language spoken by more than 300 million people worldwide. MSL educators are not only specialists in their fields but also bilingual communicators and strong mentors.

Middle School

  • English is the language of instruction for English language arts in grades six, seven, and eight.
  • French is the language of instruction for social studies in grades six and seven.
  • French is the language of instruction for mathematics in grades six and seven.
  • Students take a culture and language course, taught in French, in grades seven and eight.

High School

Students continue their immersion education in accelerated and Advanced Placement French courses. They can expand their communication skills and study cultures beyond their target language in world language courses.

By senior year, all students should aim to achieve at least the Advanced Low proficiency level as measured by the STAMP assessment, and to earn the Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy. This includes fully engaging in immersion coursework, using French beyond the classroom when possible, and embracing opportunities to deepen cultural understanding.

Milwaukee French Immersion Foundation

In 2012, student and alumni parents founded the Milwaukee French Immersion Foundation to provide enriching academic opportunities to MFIS students and build a bridge between Milwaukee French Immersion School and Milwaukee School of Languages.

The foundation’s efforts bring teaching talent, language programs, and advanced learning opportunities to students from K4 to twelfth grade, including:

  • Fundraising, recruitment, and placement of 100+ Amity Teaching interns in MFIS and MSL classrooms since 2012,
  • Hosting an online auction in support of MFIS and MSL,
  • Collaborating with Alliance Française and other community groups.
