Academics

A Marvin E. Pratt Elementary education delivers high-quality teaching within an integrative framework that combines Common Core standards and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP).

Scholars think seriously and critically, using inquiry to explore global cultures and communities in a secure, stimulating academic environment. Global mindedness is a way to think, live, and thrive in the world. Marvin E. Pratt PYP scholars want to improve the world, and they are developing the knowledge and skills to take action.

Common Core State Standards

The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.

Ambitious Instruction Plan

The Milwaukee Public Schools Ambitious Instruction Plan recognizes and celebrates that our students come from many cultures and backgrounds. This plan focuses on high-quality, culturally appropriate teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that every student masters reading, writing, and math skills in ways that are meaningful to their individual life and experiences. Our staff works together to understand each learner, find appropriate ways to assess and improve their progress, and make sure that students can apply what they have learned in productive ways in school and in their community.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The International Baccalaureate PYP for children ages 3 to 12 nurtures and develops young scholars as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.

Math

We use district-wide standards and assessments in every grade to help scholars accumulate mathematical knowledge and skills that prepare them for success in middle and high school.

Reading Language Arts

Through our Comprehensive Literacy Plan, K4 through fifth-grade scholars receive reading, writing, and oral language instruction for 90 minutes a day.

Science and Social Studies

PYP philosophy innovates how we teach and learn all subjects; particularly science and social studies. Educators combine lessons and activities in these areas during IB-intensive integrated instruction blocks.

Transdisciplinary scholarship is true PYP. Our scholars make connections across subject areas. They use math, literacy, and communication skills when designing science experiments, performing music, or even strategizing in gym class.

  • Science
Scholars examine the scientific and physical processes that impact personal health and wellness and shape climates and economies worldwide. They reflect on their own responsibility to care for and share our planet’s resources.
  • Social Studies
Scholars read and research rich traditions and diverse histories from ancient civilizations to family celebrations. Respecting all cultures and recognizing how relationships add meaning to our lives and build community are hallmarks of a PYP education. Scholars with these abilities are ready for service and success in an interconnected world.

Spanish

Pratt offers Spanish as a world language. Scholars learn conversational Spanish and vocabulary in daily lessons. As scholars progress, they learn to speak, write, and understand phrases and sentences in a language spoken in more than 20 countries.

Art, Music, Physical Education, and Social and Emotional Lessons

Art, music, physical education, and social and emotional lessons help scholars grow into creative and well-rounded young people who understand mind and body wellness.

Special Education

Our teachers can adapt the flexible and inclusive PYP framework to meet a scholar’s unique needs and maximize their talents and abilities. Our special education teachers, regular education teachers, school social worker, school psychologist, and administration work together. Per IB, special education scholars can access the content, curriculum, and delivery of the IB program.
