Mr. Nelson has been teaching band and beginning band since 1992 and has been at Pulaski since 2013. His main instrument is the trumpet, and he plays in various groups throughout the year. Currently, he is involved in two groups: one is a college student/adult band that meets in the evening during the college semester, culminating in a performance at the end of each semester. The other is a big band that plays in a style similar to the 1930s dance/jazz bands, meeting during the summer and performing around six times during the summer months.

Mr. Nelson is married and has two children. His daughter has recently graduated from college, and his son is in his third year of college. Outside of his professional life, Mr. Nelson enjoys many outdoor activities. Now that the house is quieter, he and his wife like to find places to hike, bike, or kayak during the summer, and they enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during the winter.
