He began his career working in factories and has a background in manufacturing, having worked as an assembler, maintenance worker, and machinist. Raised speaking English, Mr. Castaneda began learning Spanish in seventh grade and continued through his first year of college. He decided to learn Spanish because his grandmother only spoke the language, and he wanted to be able to communicate with her and get to know her better.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Castaneda studied at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, majoring in Biological Sciences and Environmental Science. He also worked as maintenance staff at what is now known as the School of Freshwater Sciences, where he had the opportunity to work on the R.V. Neeskay and collaborate with many professors conducting research on Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>He began his teaching career in the 2007-2008 school year as a bilingual science teacher.
