Riverside Senior Named 2026 Rosa Parks Tribute Scholarship Recipient

March 6, 2026 | News

Riverside University High School is proud to celebrate senior Jacqueline Juarez-Lucas, who has been named a recipient of the 2026 Rosa Parks Tribute Scholarship presented by the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS).
Each year, MCTS invites high school seniors from across Milwaukee County to participate in the Rosa Parks Tribute Scholarship essay contest. Students are asked to reflect on the powerful words of civil rights icon Rosa Parks: “Each person must live their life as a model for others.” Essays are evaluated by a panel of judges, and three students are selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their thoughtful reflections on leadership, courage, and community impact.
Jacqueline was selected alongside two other Milwaukee County seniors as one of the 2026 scholarship recipients, an honor that highlights her voice, perspective, and commitment to making a difference in her community.
MCTS President and CEO Steve Fuentes praised the winners for embodying the spirit of the scholarship.
“Rosa Parks’ legacy continues to remind us that leadership begins with everyday actions and moral courage,” Fuentes said. “These students exemplify those values, and we are proud to support them as they continue their educational journeys.”
The scholarship recipients are recognized in honor of Transit Equity Day, celebrated on February 4, the birthday of Rosa Parks. The day highlights the important role public transportation plays in advancing civil rights and ensuring equitable access to opportunity. Parks’ courageous refusal to give up her seat on a segregated bus helped spark the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement that led to lasting changes in transportation policy.
MCTS also commemorates Parks’ legacy each year on December 1, the anniversary of her arrest, by reserving a seat on every bus in its fleet. Each reserved seat features a red rose and a commemorative placard honoring her enduring impact on civil rights and public transit equity.
Riverside University High School congratulates Jacqueline Juarez-Lucas on this meaningful achievement and celebrates the leadership, courage, and dedication she represents within the Riverside community.
