Ambitious Instruction Plan<\/h2>\n

The Milwaukee Public Schools Ambitious Instruction Plan<\/a> recognizes and celebrates that our students come from many cultures and backgrounds. This plan focuses on high-quality, culturally appropriate teaching and learning. Our goal is to ensure that every student develops reading, writing, and math skills in ways that are meaningful to their individual lives and experiences. Our staff works together to understand each learner and find appropriate ways to assess and improve their progress. We then make sure that students can apply what they have learned in productive ways in school and in their community.<\/p>\n

Common Core State Standards<\/h2>\n

The curriculum in Milwaukee Public Schools is based on Common Core State Standards<\/a>. These standards were developed with teachers, school administrators, and experts to prepare all children for college and the workforce.<\/p>\n

Advanced Placement (AP)<\/h2>\n

Sponsored by the College Board and taught by RUHS teachers, Advanced Placement courses<\/a> give students the chance to tackle advanced content and earn college credit.<\/p>\n

PEOPLE is the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison\u2019s Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence<\/a>. It is designed to help students progress toward high school graduation and prepare for an enriching college experience. Beginning in ninth grade, accepted students are assigned a Precollege Advisor to assist them throughout their educational journey. Ninety-four percent of PEOPLE high school graduates enroll in higher education.<\/p>\n

The University of Wisconsin\u2013Milwaukee’s TRIO & Pre-College Programs<\/a> promote academic excellence in high school and support college access for first-generation, low-income, and other underrepresented students. Eligible MPS students who participate will receive access to educational resources, services, and opportunities, including tutoring, academic skill development, college visits, and residential experiences.<\/p>\n

The Wisconsin GEAR UP<\/a> program aims to increase the number of low-income students who prepare for and succeed in postsecondary education. Students in grades six through twelve get access to one-on-one advising, guidance about college and career readiness, college visits, and more. The program also offers personalized mentoring that begins in senior year and continues through their first year of college. Eligible students can apply for the GEAR UP Scholarship to help make college possible.<\/p>\n

Students at RUHS practice writing strategies while exploring diverse examples of quality literature. They also have access to elective courses such as African American Literature and History, Creative Writing, Latino American Literature, and more.<\/p>\n

RUHS is an institutional member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and many of our teachers are members. Our curriculum was created by the Core-Plus Mathematics Project.<\/p>\n

When it comes to science, learning facts is not enough. Students must be actively engaged in the learning process, which is why all our science courses are laboratory-based. This requires students to seek answers to questions while working collaboratively with other learners.<\/p>\n

Our proximity to Riverside Park, the Milwaukee River, and Lake Michigan allows our students to study scientific concepts in natural settings. RUHS also partners with UW\u2013Milwaukee and the Urban Ecology Center to offer unique opportunities to our students.<\/p>\n

Social studies combines the study of economics, geography, history, and other social sciences to help students understand people and society. Students learn to think critically and make informed decisions that benefit their communities and the world.<\/p>\n

RUHS offers French and Spanish language courses for our students, who are required to complete two years of either language to meet graduation requirements. For students who wish to study their language more, there are advanced courses available\u2014and they can even earn college credits!<\/p>\n

Dual Enrollment<\/h2>\n

Dual enrollment courses give students the chance to earn high school and college credit at the same time. RUHS educators with advanced degrees are approved to teach Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) or University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) courses at our school. Students may even attend classes on the MATC or UWM campuses.<\/p>\n

Rising Phoenix<\/a> is a program for students at participating GEAR UP high schools.
